The Indian Institute of Science Bangalore has topped the 2022 QS World University Rankings in the research category. This is the first time any Indian institute has topped the rankings.

Two other Indian institutes, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay, also figured in the top 200.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the institutes and said efforts were underway to ensure more Indian institutes get such laurels.

He tweeted, “Congratulations to @iiscbangalore, @iitbombay and @iitdelhi. Efforts are underway to ensure more universities and institutions of India scale global excellence and support intellectual prowess among the youth.”

The Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank also congratulated the institutes and said the country was emerging as a Vishvaguru.

He tweeted, “Such rapid growth in rankings was possible because of initiatives such as NEP 2020 & IOE, taken under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @NarendraModi Ji. It’s heartening to see that IISc tops the World's research.”

He further added, “I congratulate faculty members & directors of these institutes for the work that keeps us moving in the right direction of becoming a Vishvaguru.”

Established on May 27, 1909 in Bangalore, IISc is known globally for its research calibre.

The Modi government in its previous tenure in 2017 had launched the Institutes of Eminence scheme in which 20 institutes were to be nurtured to emerge as centres of excellence globally.

All three IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay were selected as Institutes of Excellence.

Additional monetary help is provided to boost the research in the selected institutes.
