Cow is our mother and we worship it, said Assam Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma on Monday in the assembly.

He added he was not asking anybody to change their food habits but to respect the sentiments of others.

He recalled how the directive principles in the Constitution of India ask to ban killing of cows.

The Bharatiya Janata Party led coalition retained power in Assam in the just concluded assembly polls. It got 75 of the 126 seats in the assembly.

He requested people not to consume beef where it is worshipped.

Chief Minister Sarma had already ordered closure of all government aided madrasas in the state and their conversion into regular schools.

He added that he would work towards two-child policy even if the opposition opposes it.

The Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi in his address to the Assembly Saturday said the state government would soon bring law to protect cows.

Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF, which contested the polls in alliance with the Congress party, has been opposing all these initiatives of the Himanta government.

The chief minister sought the opposition’s cooperation in empowering the Muslim women in the state.
