Suvendu Adhikari has been elected the new Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Monday.

The 77 newly-elected MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party elected Adhikari their leader in a meeting in Kolkata today.
Adhikari has defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in just-concluded assembly polls.

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC came back to power winning 213 seats in the assembly but Banerjee lost her seat.

Adhikari, former confidant and a minister in her government, resigned from the TMC in December last year. Later he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Adhikari was instrumental in Mamata dethroning the Left in West Bengal in 2011.
