West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar Sunday sanctioned the prosecution of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s aides in the 2014 Narada Sting Operation case.

Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, Madan Mitra and Sovan Chatterjee were ministers in the Mamata government when the alleged crime was committed.

Other than Chatterjee, all three have been reelected as TMC MLAs in the just concluded West Bengal polls. Chatterjee left TMC just before the 2021 polls.

The statement from the Raj Bhavan read, “The sanction came to be accorded by the Hon’ble Governor after CBI had made a request and made available entire documentation relevant to the case to the Hon’ble Governor…”

The Narada Sting tapes, which were allegedly recorded in 2014, were made public just before the 2016 West Bengal Assembly polls.

In March 2017, the Calcutta High Court had ordered the CBI to conduct an inquiry in the tapes.

The tapes had senior TMC leaders and ministers discussing illegal payments for government work. Some fictitious companies were set up to facilitate monetary transactions to senior TMC leaders to gain government favour.
