After a relentless attack by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Pune-based vaccine manufacturer Adar Poonawalla will be provided Y category security all over the country.
The Union Home Ministry issued orders to this effect Wednesday.
A team of 11 security personnel, including commandos, will provide round the clock security to Poonawalla.
Adar Poonawalla is the head of Pune-based Serum Institute of India which is manufacturing Covishield.
Former Congress president and Nehru family scion Rahul Gandhi has been regularly attacking Poonawalla.
The security was provided after the detailed threat assessment of the vaccine manufacturer.
Covishield and Covaxin are the two vaccines currently administered in the country.
Serum Institute has taken multiple steps in the last few months to enhance the production of Covishield to cater to the huge demand.
The vaccination process was opened for the 18-44 age bracket Wednesday. About 1.33 crore registrations happened.
Bharat has about 60 crore people in the 18-44 age bracket.
The Union government has been supporting the vaccine manufacturers in the capacity enhancement. The government provided a grant of INR 3000 Crore to SII for ramping up the facility.
