Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his first poll rally in Assam for the three-phase State legislative assembly elections scheduled for 27 March, 1 and 6 April and termed the opposition Congress as a no leader, no policy and no ideology party. He also commented that the grand old party became so unstable today that it could hardly save Assam and maintain developmental works.
Arriving in the Bhatgram area of Karimganj locality on Friday afternoon, PM Modi described the Barak valley as the gateway for Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the north-eastern region. He stated that the Bengali dominated southern Assam region remains a supporter of the saffron party since long back.
Extending greetings to the people on account of the forthcoming Holi and New Year festival (for both Bengali and Assamese community), Modi started his speech with ‘Namaskar Karimganj’ in the Bengali tone. Mentioning the shifting of the divisional commissioner’s office for Barak valley from Guwahati to Silchar by the BJP government, he assured the continuation of developmental activities in the State.
In front of hundreds of thousands of supporters, Modi reiterated the saffron government’s welfare policy as Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Viswas, where Congress continues to be disruptive to the people. Modi criticized the party for its misrule before the BJP came to power in 2016.
He alleged that Congress only divided Assam in various ways, but the BJP government tried its best to connect the people not only physically, but culturally too. Modi also accused the Congress leaders as desperate for power and pursuing the mentality to do anything for votes.
Mentioning great Ahom general Lachit Borphukan for his bravery in defeating the invaders (during the battle of Saraighat), he also paid tributes to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose for his incomparable patriotism. Modi sought electoral supports to 14 BJP candidates along with a saffron ally Asom Gana Parishad’s nominee in Barak valley Meanwhile, after the withdrawal of 33 candidates for the State’s second phase polling on 1 April covering 39 seats (out of 126 assembly constituencies), 345 candidates remain in the fray. Friday is the last day for withdrawal of nominations in the fray for third phase polls on 6 April.
The second phase will decide the electoral fates of BJP leader & State ministers Parimal Suklabaidya, Bhabesh Kalita, Pijush Hazarika along with the assembly’s deputy speaker Aminul Haque Laskar, once a Congress minster and now a saffron nominee Gautam Roy with others. Bodoland People’s Front leader and State minister Rihon Daimari, Congress leaders Kamalakhya Dev Purkayasta, Kishor Kumar Bhattacharya, Siddique Ahmed, AIUDF leader Sirajuddin Ajmal, etc are also in the fray.
