New Delhi: The Election Commission swung into quick action on Wednesday evening shortly after news spread like wildfire that West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress nominee from Nandigram was ‘injured’ in an alleged attack in the constituency.
Sources said the poll panel will seek a report from the state Chief Secretary and Special election observers on the same. The reports ought to be submitted by March 12, sources said. Immediately after the ‘incident’, the Chief Minister herself described the same as “saazish (conspiracy)”.
“There were no local police…even the Superintendent of Police (SP) was not here,” she said.
However, the BJP and the Congress leaders have termed the entire episode as high drama.
“It is a scripted drama,” BJP leader Pranay Roy told a television channel.
Congress floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury dubbed it as drama and “Bhandami (a fraudulent episode)”.
BJP general secretary in-charge of West Bengal, Kailash Vijayvargiya said – “There should be no politics surrounding this incident”.
Another BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya said the central government and the Union Home Ministry have been informed.
“The centre is willing to provide her central security if she desires so,” Bhattacharya said.
The BJP Bengal unit in its Twitter handle shared video footage of TV9 news channel and wrote – “Here is an eye witness account of what happened… Refutes Mamata Banerjee’s claim of attack!”
