Herath, a festival that is eagerly awaited by every single Kashmiri Pandit, has arrived. The celebration begins today.

Herath, Mahashivratri for others, has a very special place in the cultural calendar of Kashmiri Pandits.

The marriage of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati is celebrated.

This festival is celebrated for three days by the Pandits.

The famous Shankaracharya temple in Srinagar is full of devotees on this pious occasion.

The customary pooja is performed till late at night and this has been going on since ages.

Since the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir, many things have changed. This day is also a reminder to many what they have not been able to celebrate in the valley.

They were forced to flee by the radical Islamists. Pandits also pray for their return to their motherland.
