After CPM’s victory in the recently concluded Kerala local body elections, the party had unleashed massive violence against its political rivals. But, the latest attack is on their cultural enemy- Hindu Temple. 11 CPM workers were arrested in connection with attacking a Hindu temple in Palakkad. The arrested include the party’s area committee members, Charges along the lines of ‘hurting religious sentiments’ and ‘creating enmity’ have been levelled against the CPM leaders.
BJP had won a handsome number of seats and expanded its presence to more regions of Kerala. The party even retained Palakkad Municipality and won Pandalam municipality which the CPM had held for years. Following this rattled CPM with the backing of state machinery started to attack BJP workers and party offices. Now the anger has been turned to Hindu temples.
CPM has always shown its animosity towards Hinduism and Hindu culture. Contrary to the demand of devotees, the party led Kerala government tried to disrupt the customs at Sabarimala temple by taking women activists to the temple. After this, LDF lost the Lok Sabha election 19-1 to the UDF led by Congress. Post the local body election results, it has become clear that BJP is replacing Congress as the principal opposition party in Kerala. With no real agenda to fight BJP, CPM has resorted to violence to stop the saffron party from strengthening further.
