Shakuntala Haldar, a BJP candidate for panchayat polls and her husband Chandra Haldar were brutally murdered in Kultali, West Bengal on April 6th. The gruesome murder of the wife and husband who were both active BJP members took place at midnight of April 6th at Kultali in the Baruipur subdivision of the South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.
Political motivated attacks and murders in West Bengal have been continuing despite the lockdown due to Corona virus. Earlier this week, another BJP member was attacked in West Bengal by TMC workers over a local issue.
Last week TMC leader Prasun Bhoumick had threatened that all those houses who would turn-off lights on April 5th at 9PM on PM’s appeal of solidarity would be marked.
Bhoumick in a Facebook post in Bengali wrote, “Those who will switch off their lights at 9PM on 5.4.20…their homes will be marked with chalk. At least, their addresses will be put in a list”. The BJP demanded action on the threat and has also filed a complaint. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had mocked at PM’s appeal to light Diya and had said that she would prefer to sleep if she wanted to.
West Bengal is also accused of hiding the true data of the number of infected by Corona virus. The allegation was made as the CMO was accused of taking away the power of the treating doctors to issue the death certificate of patients who die of COVID19. Instead a committee would decide on the same and then issue the death certificate says a government order.
While reports suggest that atleast 11 died of COVID19 infection in West Bengal, the official count was mentioned as 3 which gave credence to the accusation.
