“I appeal to all not to go into panic buying to store essential commodities. Steps being taken to ensure that there is no scarcity of essential commodities,” he added.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in his special address to the nation, called for a Janta Curfew, a curfew of the people, by the people, for the people to fight coronavirus. In an attempt to contain the spread of the deadly virus, PM Modi requested all the citizens to abide by the ‘Janata Curfew’, on March 22 from 7 AM-9 PM.

“I want to appeal to everyone that you must venture out of home only if it is absolutely necessary. Senior citizens above 60 years of age must remain indoors,” the Prime Minister said.

“For the last two months, millions are working day and night in hospitals and airports and those serving others by not taking care of themselves. On Mar22, at 5 PM, we should stand on our doorways, balconies, in our windows and keep clapping hands and ringing the bells for five minutes to salute and encourage them,” Shri Narendra Modi said.

“I appeal to all not to go into panic buying to store essential commodities. Steps being taken to ensure that there is no scarcity of essential commodities,” he added.

“I request the countrymen to avoid visiting hospitals for routine check-ups. If you have appointment for any non-essential surgery, please postpone for one month. We should keep in mind that pressure should not come on hospitals,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that ‘Resolve and restraint’ are required to combat global coronavirus pandemic. “Restraint is compulsory in such a situation. Restraint in the form of going out of our home. Today, what is known as social distancing is very necessary in tackling this problem. If you feel that you are okay and nothing is going to happen to you, then this thinking is not right. You would be doing a grave injustice to you and your family,” he added.

People working in essential services such as police, medical services, media, home delivery and fire fighting etc will remain exempt from the Janata Curfew. Shri Narendra Modi also requested the citizens to call at least 10 people every day and tell them about the ‘Janta Curfew’ as well as the measures to prevent.
