The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) seeks report from Kerala DGP within 21 days on Syro-Malabar Catholic Synod resolution

In the wake of the resolution on Love Jihad passed by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Synod on Tuesday, the Vice Chairman of National Commission for Minorities, George Kurian demanded NIA probe into Love Jihad cases in Kerala. He also sought report from Kerala DGP on the resolution passed by the synod.

“The Synod of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church stated in a resolution that Christian girls are increasingly being converted to Islam through ‘Love Jihad’ for terror activities. The Synod observed that half of 21 individuals who joined IS in 2016 from Kerala were Christians who were converted to Islam. The Church lamented that even though several complaints were registered, the Kerala Police had failed to take appropriate and timely action. This has led to terror outfits intensifying their nefarious activities with impunity,” said George Kurian in a press statement issued on Thursday.

On the concerns of the Church, Mr. George Kurian, Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, sought a report within 21 days from the DGP of Kerala.

In September 2019, Vice-Chairman had apprised the Union Home Ministry about two cases of alleged ‘Love Jihad’ brought to his notice by parents of the girl children. The Home Ministry has taken stern action in those cases. The Synod resolution vindicates the stand taken by the Vice-Chairman on ‘Love Jihad’ cases.

“In this context, the Vice-Chairman urged the Union Home Ministry to take note of the resolution of the Church and order an inquiry into all alleged cases of ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala,” read the statement.

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, the biggest Christian Church in Kerala, had expressed concern over the growing incidents of Love Jihad in which Christian girls are targeted and killed in Kerala. The concern was raised at the Synod, meeting of the bishops, on Tuesday. The meeting observed that young Christian ladies have now become a target, revealing that over half of the 21 women who joined the Islamic State from Kerala belong to the Christian community. The Church had urged the police to treat Love-Rape Jihad and forced conversion as social issues and act accordingly.
