ABVP in Jammu University today organized a ‘My hand with Disha’ campaign in the university campus near Jantr Mantr. The campaign was organized for demanding death sentence for the rapists and the demanded the government to frame laws for the same. The campaign was led by Palak Sambyal and Manisha Khanna of Law Department and coordinated by Dyutima Kesar, Secretary, ABVP JU unit. ABVP JU unit had also organized a candle march for seeking justice for the victim’s family.

More than 200 students coloured their hands and made a mark of their support on the wall for demanding justice for Dr.Priyanka Reddy who was brutally raped and murdered in Telengana few days ago. While adressing the students, Palak and Manisha said that such incidents have increased in India which was not the basic ethos of this country, for which not only laws but the society needs to wake up. They said that ‘Beti Bachao and Beta Padhao’ should be the new mantra for the government to curb such ill minded youth who have such sick mindset.

While adressing the media, Dyutima Kesar said that ABVP has protested all around the country for demanding strict laws as in death penalty for the rapists. She said that it was a welcome gesture and speech by the Defence Minister of Central government who said that the government is ready to frame strong laws for rape crimes. She said it is very unfortunate that the so called intellectuals have today failed to return their awards or make any statement to condemn such an act of brutality in Telengana. She also condemned the statement of cabinet minister of Telengana government who said that she must have called the police first rather than her sister and asked the government of Telengana to call for his resignation for such a statement. She further said that the students of the university are united in demanding death penalty for rape crimes.

Ajay Thakur, Vice President ABVP JU unit, Chaitanya Randhawa, Joint Secretary JU unit, Joginder Kumar, In-charge Working Department, said that the university has also witnessed an incident of harrasment in geology department yesterday by the HOD which is highly condemnable and the guilty must be punished after the enquiry committee findings. Secondly ABVP has already demanded that a student representative be included in the JU Committee Against Sexual Harassment (CASH) committee. They said that this will be of temporary help for the administration and will be of no help for the students if that HOD is suspended or transferred to a more important position. They must be attached to some non-performing post and secondly the university must conduct election for two student representatives for the JU CASH committee.

Others who were present were Shubam Amar, President of ABVP Jammu University, Anoop Rajput and Deepak Gupta.
