Nation Bids Tearful Adieu to True Patriot, Quintessential Swayamsevak, Exceptional Administrator & Real Aam Admi CM Manohar Parrikar

With President Ram Nath Kovind announced the passing away of Goa Chief Minister and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, tributes are pouring in from all quarters, cutting across political lines. Parrikar breathed his last at his residence near Panaji on Sunday. He had been ailing for the last few months.
Manohar Parrikar had undergone treatment at AIIMS, Delhi, and a private hospital in Mumbai and in the US. Manohar Parikkar was four-time Chief Minister of Goa.
Born on December 13, 1955, in Goa’s Mapusa, Parrikar completed his schooling from Loyola High Schol and graduated from IIT-Bombay in metallurgical engineering in 1978. He married Medha Parrikar and the couple was blessed with two sons. However, in 2000, his wife died of cancer.
Parrikar was an ideal swayamsevak throughout his life. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a young age and became a mukhya shikshak in the final years of his schooling. After graduating from IIT, he continued to work for Sangh as a Karyakarta in Mapusa while maintaining a private business. Later he became Sanghchalak at the age of 26. He was also a key organiser of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in North Goa.
In a condolence message, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat and Sarkaryavah Shri Bhaiyyaji Joshi said that the nation has lost a knowledgeable leader, a good administrator, a model citizen and a devoted Swayamsevak with the passing away of the Chief Minister of Goa and former Defence Minister of India Shri Manohar Parrikar. They also prayed for the Sadgati for the departed soul.
Taking to Twitter, Kovind said, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness was borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid his tribute to the former defence minister. He tweeted, “Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters.”
Cabinet condoles sad demise of Shri Manohar Parrikar
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has condoled the sad demise of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister on 17th March, 2019 at Panaji, Goa. The Cabinet observed silence for two minutes in the memory of Late Shri Manohar Parrikar.
The Cabinet has also approved observing one day of mourning by the Government of India and flying the National Flag at half-mast on 18th March, 2019 in all the States/UTs Capitals including Delhi and throughout State of Goa.
The Union Cabinet further approved following condolence Resolution in the profound memory of Shri Manohar Parrikar:
“The Cabinet expresses profound sorrow at the sad demise of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa in the evening of 17th March, 2019 at Panaji, Goa. In his passing away, the country has lost a veteran and distinguished leader, affectionately called as the Chief Minister of commoners.
Born on December 13, 1955 at Mapusa, Goa, Shri Parrikar was educated at Loyola School, Margao and later graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai in 1978. Before entering politics, Shri Parrikar had joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a young age and became a Mukhya Shikshak (Chief Instructor) in the final years of his schooling itself. After graduating from IIT, he resumed RSS work in Mapusa and became a Sanghchalak at the age of 26.
As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shri Parrikar was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Goa in 1994. He became the Chief Minister of Goa for the first time on 24th October, 2000 and continued till 27th February, 2002. He was re-elected as Chief Minister on 3rd June, 2002 and served till 2nd February, 2005. He became Chief Minister of Goa for the third time on 9th March, 2012 and continued till 8th November, 2014. On 9th November, 2014, Shri Parrikar became Union Minister of Defence and continued till 13th March, 2017, he was again sworn in as Chief Minister of Goa on 14th March, 2017.
Shri Parrikar will be remembered for his simplicity and his abilities as an exceptional administrator. His contribution to the building of modern Goa and to the modernization of India’s Armed Forces as well as improvement to the lives of ex.-Servicemen will never be forgotten.
Shri Parrikar was awarded the ‘Distinguished Alumnus Award’ by IIT Mumbai in 2001, Honorary Doctorate by National Institute of Technology, Goa in 2018 and the Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Award in 2018, among others. He is survived by his two sons.

Goa has lost one of the greatest leaders of the soil. This loss is certainly irreversible and incalculable. Though I had political differences with him, I respected him as an individual as well as a leader of great abilities.I consider myself lucky to have witnessed the entire political career of our beloved ‘ Bhai ‘ who rose from a middle class family background to the height of the Defense Minister of India and I respect him a lot for his achievements. The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay paid tributes to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, an alumnus of the institute. Remembering the late leader, the institute said, “Goa Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar’s demise comes as a shock to all of us at IIT Bombay. He was the Institute’s Distinguished Alumnus and keenly involved with many initiatives at IIT Bombay. He was also deeply involved with the launch of IIT Goa. He was the Chief Guest for the 55th Convocation of IIT Bombay held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10.00 am at the Institute’s Convocation Hall. The Institute condoles his demise. The Institute had felicitated its Distinguished Alumnus Mr. Manohar Parrikar, former Minister of Defence, Government of India, who graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from the Institute in 1978, “In recognition of his contribution to the Development of the Country,” on the Alumni Day in 2014.”
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said Parrikar’s dedication and simplicity won many hearts and he also contributed immensely towards the development of the nation.
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar also expressed grief over the demise of Parrikar. “We have lost an able and industrious administrator who made his mark with his simple demeanour and extraordinary intellect. My sincere condolences to his family members,” Pawar tweeted.
