“The Walled City of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India” has been proposed for UNESCO World Heritage recognition, Union Minister for Culture Mahesh Sharma informed Rajya Sabha today.
As per Operation Guidelines 2017, only one site can be nominated by the state party each year.
“The recognition of World Heritage is a matter of great pride. It impacts the local economy by giving a boost to domestic and international tourism leading to increased employment generation, the creation of world-class infrastructure and augmentation of the sale of local handicrafts, handlooms and heritage memorabilia. Besides, it adds to the prestige of the country as well as the prescribed site,” Dr Sharma said
There are a total of 37 World Heritage sites in India at Present. Once a country has got its sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, the resulting prestige often helps raise awareness among citizens and governments for heritage preservation. The state may also receive financial assistance and expert advice from the World Heritage Committee to support activities for the conservation of its sites.
