About Chambal Region
When it comes to Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh most people think of dacoits. But the region has been culturally rich due to ancient temples and many historic places. Daulat Rao Sindhia and Jaswant Rao Holker met for an alliance at Sabalgarh Fort in this region against the East India Company in 1805. This Fort is a 16-17th-century hill fort near Sabalgarh and is situated on a large rock.
What to See
The notable places of interest in this region include Pahargarh Cave Painting on rocks on the bank of the Asana River. These paintings are over 30,000 years old. These are located 15 km from Fort Pahargarh. The Kakan Math Temple here was built without using any adhesive materials. It stands on a spot two miles away from Sihoniya in the north west of Morena District. One can also find the ruins of Jain temples of 11th century at Sihoniya. Kuntalpur known as Kutwar is the biggest ancient village of the Chambal Valley. It is just like Hastinapur, Rajgraha and Chadi of the Mahabharata period. The ancient Amba or Harrisiddhi Devi temple is also very famous. It is said to be the home place Kunti, the mother of Pandvas. There is a temple of Lord Shiva called Tekri Mandir. In the north of Naresar, there is a sixty four Yogini Temple situated on the hundred feet high mountain. It is a wonderful circular construction of 170 feet radius on the style of Delhi's Parliament House. Attached to circular verandah there are sixty four rooms and a big courtyard in the temple. In the centre of the temple, there is the circular temple of Lord Shiva and Lord Anuranjan. Near to Kotwar has an Old Kali Maa Temple also known as Mata Basaiya.
How to Reach
There is bus connectivity to Morena District of MP from New Delhi, Agra and Gwalior. It is 273 km from New Delhi.
