Bengaluru: As part of the Samskrita Bharati’s plan to organise Janapada Sammelans in almost 500 districts of Bharat, a sammelan, ‘Samskrita Ganga’, was organised on November 19 at Sri Digvijaya Lakshmi Naramsimha Swamy Temple, Basavanagudi. The day-long celebrations were planned with focus on creating awareness amongst the public regarding the treasure chest of knowledge that lies hidden in the Samskrit literature.
Many cultural events and an exhibition on ‘Science in Samskrit’ were also organised. The event attracted thousands of people from all walks of life including children from many nearby schools.
A procession, organised as part of the Sammelan, was flagged off by Sri Swami Harshanandaji Maharaj of the Ramakrishna Math. Shri Shridharaha, proprietor of Hospitality India, Shri MD Kiran, MD of iSol Softech and Dr Priyadarshini Iyer, Supreme Court advocate, inaugurated the event.
Technical talks and debates on various topics in science, language, dharma, etc were held throughout the day. Sessions on Indian Mathematics, Astronomy and Ayurveda were well received. A session on Sidhanta Shiromani of Bhaskaracharya by Aradhana Anand and session on Geometry and Vedic Maths by Abhiram M, both students of Class 10, was the highlight of the intellectual sessions.
The exhibition was the cynosure of Samskrita Ganga. It exhibited ancient Indian science, science in Samskrit and showcased the use of Samskrit for daily use items. Unique competitions in understanding Samskrit were held for both adults and kids at the event. A workshop on Vedic Mathematics for teachers and parents was also conducted.
A unique programme on ‘Ayurveda and Samskrit’ was conducted by the students of Samvida Pathashala. The event concluded in the presence of Sri Sri 1008 Satyarmateertha Sreepadangalavaru of Uttaradi Math. Smt Dr Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, founder trustee of Adamya Chetana, was chief guest at the closing ceremony. — Prashanth Vaidyaraj
March for Vanvasi Rights
Kasaragod: A Vanvasi rally was organised at Kanhagarh in Kerala on November 19 under the leadership of district president of Kerala Vanvasi Vikas Kendra Shri K Damodran. It was collectively led by Shri KC Paithal, Smt Pushpa Amakkala, Shri Sajeevan Pullikur, Shri SS Raj, Shri Krishna Murthy along with Kalyan Ashram national vice president Shri Kripa Prasad Singh. The three-km long rally was joined by thousands of Vanvasis. People from Kurba, Marathimavile, Malabuttuva, Kuruchia and Kuruma along with Pania joined the rally to press upon their demands which included drinking water in their villages and connectivity of their hamlets with road and electricity. The Government of India provides housing facilities for BPL families, toilet for all families, food arrangements and scholarship to Vanvasi students in Kerala also. Certainly community houses are there in few Vanvasi villages, but they are used as party office of the CPI-M.
The situation in Kerala today is that Vanvasis are not allowed to organise their cultural programmes even in villages. The festivals and folk dances cannot be organised freely without community houses, which are illegally occupied by CPM workers. Addressing the gathering Shri Kripa Prasad Singh said the Kalyan Ashram works for development of the Vanvasis and runs 20,117 sewa projects. He appealed to prominent personalities of the society to support the Vanvasis and the Kalyan Ashram for development of the country.
Vanvasi girls, Sarenya, Shilpa and Varsha, were felicitated by Shri Singh for their MBBS study whereas Midunna, Shruti were felicitated for LLB study. Manikanthan, M Rajappan, Unnni Krishnan, T Kannan and Guruappa were felicitated for promoting farming and educating the Vanvasis.
Dr S Subbiah & Ashish Chauhan elected ABVP President and General Secretary
Mumbai: Dr S Subbiah (Chennai) and Shri Ashish Chauhan (Mumbai) were unanimously elected as the new national president and general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad respectively for the Session 2017-18. It was announced by election officer Dr Raman Trivedi recently. The term of both the newly elected office bearers will be for one year. They will take charge of their responsibilities at 63rd National Conference of the ABVP scheduled to be organised in Ranchi from November 30 to December 3.
Prof Subbiah hails from Thoothukudi District in Tamil Nadu. Right from his student life, he has been active in
student movement. A noted cancer specialist Dr Subbiah has done MBBS and further earned his M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology and is presently working as Professor & HoD, Department of Surgical Oncology at Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. He has performed more than 1,000 surgeries, published 27 medical papers in National and International Journals and had mentored 40 students in super speciality of Surgical Oncology. He is member of many associations of Surgical Oncology on national level. He had inclination for serving the society from his student age, and has deep interest for development of education and history of Tamil Nadu. He has held many responsibilities in the ABVP since 1986 including Tamil Nadu State president, and is national vice-president since 2015.
Shri Chauhan is native to Rohru in Shimla District of Himachal Pradesh. He has done BSc, BJMC (Journalism) and MBA. He is active in ABVP since 2003. He has been president of Students’ Union of Government College, Seema, District Convener, University Unit Secretary, President, District Organising Secretary and National Secretary. He has effectively led nationalistic thought against Left forces on campuses in Himachal Pradesh. His efforts for standing for quality education and student issues in All India Institutes (IITs, IIMs, NLUs etc) in last many years through the platform ‘Think India’ has been praiseworthy. He was member of Indian Youth Delegation to China under Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Also, he visited US under Department of State’s Legislative Fellows program 2016. He has spoken and presented papers on Youth, Education and Indo-China relations. He is presently Convener of Think India, Mumbai Organising Secretary and Secretary General of Indo-China Youth Dialogue and is based in Mumbai.
NOBW Seeks Hike in Gratuity
upto Rs 20 Lakh
New Delhi: Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh affiliate National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) has demanded an ordinance to increase the gratuity limit from Rs 10 to 20 lakh for private and public sector employees. In a press statement the NOBW said the increased gratuity should be implemented from January 1, 2016. The limit of Gratuity of Central Government employees was increased from 10 to 20 lakh by the 7th Pay Commission from January 1, 2016.
The Government first assured to bring the Amendment Bill in Monsoon Session of the Parliament, but it was not approved by the Cabinet. Then the Cabinet approved the Bill on September 12, 2017 and planned to present it in the Winter Session, but due to Assembly elections in some states, there has been no announcement of the Winter Session till now. Thousands of employees who have been retired since January 1, 2016 have not been able to get the benefit of this increased gratuity. The Government should not discriminate between the employees of the Central Government and the private sector and the public sector workers in this way. Hence, the Government should immediately bring the ordinance to increase the limit of the gratuity of the Bank employees from January 1, 2016.
Sewa Sangam in Hubballi from Dec 1
Hubballi: A three-day Sewa Sangam by the Rashtriya Sewa Bharati (RSB) will be held from December 1 to 3. The Sangam would be inaugurated by national organising secretary of the RSB Shri Rakesh Jain, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Vyavastha Pramukh Shri Mangesh Bhende and Puducherry’s LG Dr Kiran Bedi. RSS Sarkaryavah Shri Bhaiyaji Joshi will address a public gathering on December 2. The second day will also see women’s and youth conventions. The Sewa Bharati will also felicitate those who have made difference to the lives of people through various service activities. More than 150 Sewa organisations are expected to participate in the Sewa Sangam. — R Guruprasad
