The School of Sciences though contributing significantly is by and large unnoticed under the over-emphasis on ideological overtones of social sciences in JNU.
The School of Environmental Sciences SES at JNU has multi-disciplinary and diversified approach in earth, atmospheric and biological sciences. Linkages between Ecological and Social processes give an additional dimension to School’s interest, making the work relevant. But unfortunately there is no interdisciplinary approach in general and all the departments are working in isolation.
Environmental knowledge for Local actions is needed Interface with social and local realities. Many pertinent issues like CNG introduction, Yamuna action plan, natural resource management were never researched and taught in SES in detail. Environmental Research is not well integrated with environmental actions that are happening at ground. JNU Environmental Sciences should become an incubation center for budding environmentalists, eco warriors and Greenpreuners. Presently there is no focus on research led entrepreneurship in various fields of environmental sciences.
Presently, in the climate change discourse SES has no significant role, where as other schools of JNU are playing a very proactive role. Bio Diversity, ecological sustainability issues needs more emphasis. Technology Interface and environmentally appropriate technologies needs to be identified and promoted as part of the courses. Certificate programs in EIA, Remote sensing, Eco village planning, biodiversity, WWTP, appropriate technologies etc needs to be offered to youth who could not become part of JNU systems. Refresher programs needs to be organised for alumni on latest development & Networking. Land to Lab Programs need to be well defined to National priorities before implementing.
