After the sweeping victory in the civic polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bengaluru, the BJP repeated its triumph in the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC) polls in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The elections were held on September 20, 2015. In a spectacular electoral victory, BJP bagged 11 seats out of 24 seats.
While BJP asserted its dominance in 11 seats, Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) got 6 and 2 seats respectively. AIADMK and DMK finished with one seat each and the rest of the three seats were occupied by independent candidates. In the 2010 elections, the BJP won only four seats whereas the Congress party won nine seats out of 18 seats. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress which had won one seat in last elections did not field even a single candidate from any of the 24 constituencies this year.
Speaking to the Organiser, BJP National Secretary Shri Tarun Chugh said, “Not only in the PBMC polls, BJP made a big leap also in Pradhan elections in which the Party won 43 Pradhan seats. And we have won majority of the Zilla Parishads in Andamans.” He attributed the success to the good governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the excellent organisational skills of BJP President Amit Shah. Shri Tarun Chugh is in-charge for Andaman and Nicobar Island.
As two independent candidates also joined the Party, BJP has ensured its majority and elected Smt Sheela Singh as the chairperson of PBMC. “People of Port Blair city have shown faith in BJP and Shri Narendra Modi and I shall try my best to follow the mantra of out Prime Minister, which is sabka sath sabka vikas,” Smt Sheela Singh said. In Pradhan elections, the BJP candidates won in 43 out of 70 Pradhan seats. Likewise, the party won 22 out of 35 seats of Zilla Parishad.

Reach out to the Unreached

Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smt Smriti Irani who was on her maiden visit to Nagaland, inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Human Development at Chuchuyimlang Village in Mokokchung on October 2.
The institute is a joint venture of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram and TATA Institute of Social Science (TISS). Irani called upon Nagas to be ambassador of peace and non-violence as taught and practiced by Gandhiji and at the same time imbibe the life of Lal Bahadur Shastri by committing to true governance for the welfare of people.
Invoking for imbibing the teachings of the two Bharateeya greats, Irani said Gandhiji and Shastri not only defined Bharateeya history but the history of the world and humanity. She also mentioned founder of Nagaland Gandhiji Ashram, Natwarbhai Thakkar in her speech for his contribution to the society. On the occasion, the Union Minister also announced the launching of Pradhan Mantri Mudhra Yojana scheme by the Prime Minister with the aim of “funding the unfunded.”
The human development institute at Chuchuyimlang is a part of TISS extension programme to reach out to the unreached in accessing education, which in turn would equip society to develop human capabilities.
Through this scheme, Smriti Irani said youths all across the country can avail loans from 50,000 to 10 lakh without providing any collateral in order to take up business for self sustenance and self employment.
Speaking on the occassion Nagaland Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, said the concern and support shown by the Union Minister, HRD towards the Naga people is a reflection of Government of Bharat’s attachment to the people of Nagaland particularly in skilling the rural youths. Zeliang also felicitated and congratulated  Natwarbhai Thakkar, for tirelessly and selflessly working towards the uplift of the living condition of the rural youth.
He also extended gratitude to TISS for establishing the fifth campus in Chuchuyimlang Village and congratulated the citizens for generously donating 232 acres of land for the establishment of the institute.
Natwarbhai Thakkar, in his welcome speech, said Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Human Development is the “best gift of mother India to the people of Nagas and the North-East.” With the institute, Thakkar envisioned that Chuchuyimlang Village will become an educational hub not only for Nagaland but for the entire North-East and at the same time promote the ‘Look East Policy’.
