Akhilesh Government’s Laxity in Badaun Case ?

The most hideous murder of two girls in Badaun committed after the most repugnant kind of rape that was ever perpetrated in Uttar Pradesh shocked not only the State and nation but also the United Nations that expressed massive outrage, condemning it and calling for immediate action against the perpetrators.

The United Nations too has condemned the “brutal” gang rape and murder of two teenage girls, calling for immediate action against the perpetrators and to address violence against women and girls across India.

To the utter shock of everyone, the police was drunk when the family first approached them. The family alleges that when they approached the local police for help, they refused to register the First Information Report (FIR). Angry over police apathy in registering the FIR, the villagers protested by blocking traffic with dead bodies of the girls on Ushait-Lilawan Road and also demanded suspension of all the policemen posted in Ushait Police Station.
The National Commission of Women (NCW) took suo moto cognisance of the incident, describing the case as “gruesome”. The postmortem report of the two girls confirms that they were raped before the murder.
The State government initially took a softer approach in the matter, as the perpetrators were allegedly in alliance with the local MP Dharmendra Yadav, Mulayam’s nephew. But finally Akhilesh had to bow under pressure mounted from all sides and got arrested the five of seven accused, recommending CBI probe in the case. Two unidentified accused are absconding.
Katra outpost incharge Ram Vilas Yadav, constables Sarvesh Yadav and Chhatrapal Yadav have been suspended. The State government has also promised to set-up a fast track court to punish the culprits. Two of the men arrested for allegedly raping and murdering two cousin sisters have confessed to the crime. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh”s Principal Secretary (Home) Anil Kumar Gupta has also been transfered in the aftermath of the strident attack on the State government over the Badaun gangrape and murder case. The family of the Badaun rape victims alleged that they have received threats and demanded security from Central forces, saying they do not trust the State police. “We are being told that who will protect us once the media leaves the village and politicians stop frequenting us,” said the father of the victim. He added that “I don”t need compensation; I want justice for my daughters”.

All five accused who had been identified are now under arrest. Two are yet to be identified. Two policemen are among the five arrested accused.

The BJP women’s wing staged protest in front of the office of CM Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, where water cannons were used on them. Hundreds of women workers of the BJP tried to march towards Akhilesh Yadav’s office, but were prevented by the police who had heavily barricaded the area. Union Women and Child Welfare Minister, Maneka Gandhi blames police laxity for the horrific gang rape and says a “rape crisis cell” will be constituted for speedy action on such incidents.

All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) demaned that the policemen allegedly involved in the case be named as accused and not as “abetters” in the FIR.
