Fortnight long campaign from September 20 to October 4
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the country’s premier student organisation, launched a fortnight long campaign for women security on September 20. The campaign began the same day all over the country and will conclude on October 4. All senior ABVP leaders are participating in the events and all the units are holding different activities to generate awareness in the society on the issue of national significance.
“The decision to launch the campaign was taken keeping in view the recent rise in incidents of crimes against women all over the country. Fact is that in many parts of the country it has become difficult for women or girls to come out from their houses as there is sharp rise in the incidents of acid attacks, eve teasing, rape, molestation. Not only this, many girl students have to underwent different kinds of torture in the name of educational activities like internal evaluation, research, marks for practical, sports activities etc. Preventing this trend is the collective responsibility of all. We strongly believe that today’s women don’t feel safe because of the wrongdoings of the UPA Government,” said Shri Shrirang Kulkarni, national secretary of ABVP while talking to Organiser.
During the fortnight long campaign many activities like organising symposiums, forming human chains, etc. are being organised. At the same time a memorandum is also being submitted to the President of India through District Magistrates requesting him to take action on the 25 major demands highlighted in the memorandum.
Prominent demands include disposal of the cases of rape, acid attack and sexual exploitation through fast track courts; improvement and implementation of the laws related to crime against women, life imprisonment to the rapists and death sentences in the rarest of the rare cases, formation of high power agency which look after the work of from punishing the culprits to rehabilitating the victims, free facility of emergency call by all the mobile service provider company, etc. President Shri Pranab Mukherjee has been requested to exhort the Government to seriously act on these demands so that every women or girl of the country can feel secure round the clock.
The ABVP has also started a signature campaign in educational institutions demanding the Government to enact and implement stern laws to ensure safety of women.
