Insults national song by walking out from Lok Sabha during Vande Mataram

The Talibani conduct of Bahujan Samaj Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq stunned the nation on May 8 when he brazenly walked out of the Lok Sabha while the national song Vande Mataram was being played before the sine die adjournment of the Parliament. Barq lives in Moradabad and is Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, near Meerut, in Uttar Pradesh. He walked out when all the members were on their feet.

“One honourable member walked out when Vande Mataram was being played. I take very serious view of this. I want to know why this happened.” Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said in the House, before making the announcement of the adjournment.

The BJP took a strong view to this act of the BSP MP. “Members have no right to insult the national song especially when they have taken oath. The Speaker has taken the right move by naming the MP. He has insulted Parliament,” said BJP spokesman Syed Shahnawaz Hussain adding that the “Speaker should be stricter on this and act firmly”.

Terming the walkout of Barq as “Taliban-like conduct”, BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said such leaders do not have a right to be parliamentarians or even citizens of the country. “Every session of Parliament, which is the temple of democracy, starts with the national anthem and ends with the rendition of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’. Unfortunately, the national song has been dishonoured,” Shri Naqvi said.

He further said those who do politics in the name and ideology of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, a Dalit icon who headed the committee that drafted the Constitution, have shown disrespect to the national song. “By boycotting the national song, he has insulted the Constitution and its norms. Those who hate ‘Vande Mataram’ not only have no right to be a part of the Parliament but also have no right to live in this country,” he said, attacking the government for keeping mum on the issue.
