Rural workers under the banner of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh submitted memorandums to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh through Tehsildar and Block Development officers across the country on November 23 with the requested to end their woes and ensure better wages and facilities in villages. The workers first staged dharnas and then submitted the memorandums. There are reports of organising the dharnas in all states of the country.
BMS national president Shri Saji Narain CK led the workers in Thrissur in Kerala, while national general secretary Shri Baijnath Rai led in Bawana, Delhi. National vice president Smt Mangalamba Rao was in Bengaluru, while zonal organising secretary Shri Sunil Kirvai was in Raipur. Former general secretary Shri Udairao Patwardhan was in Pune and north zone organising secretary Shri Pawan Kumar led the workers at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
When the rural workers were staging dharnas and submitting memorandums to the local authorities, the workers from organised sector including the banking, insurance and pension were staging dharnas against FDI in these vital sectors at different parts of the country. They said the FDI in these sectors would ruin them and the country will be the biggest losers.
In the memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister, the rural people demanded effective implementation of rural schemes and proper facilities of drinking water, health and education at all villages. They said the workers should be engaged in agriculture activities through MG-NAREGA. They said all the Kisan Mitra, Anganwadi workers, agriculture labourers, mid day meal workers and brick field workers should be granted at least minimum wages. (FOC)
