A free run for criminals, rapists and hooligans
Ministers and MLAs also facing criminal charges
The continuing series of rape cases has exposed the Haryana government to condemnation and ridicule. The rising incidence of such cases and reluctance of the police to register cases against the culprits leads one to believe that the law and order machinery seems to be practically non-existent in the state. From the current state of affairs, one is led to presume that the police is more involved in protecting criminals than making the state safe for its citizens. The administration seems to be utterly helpless in ensuring law and order in Haryana. The first incident of gang rape in Dabra village of Hisar, in which the father of the victim had to commit suicide, illustrates the callous attitude of the police and administration. Since the miscreants escape punishment, it emboldens them further; in fact the state has come to be designated as a ‘rape state’, judging by the fact that as many as 14 rape cases occurred in just 30 days. It would seem that the police and the political administration have gone into hibernation, leaving the people at the mercy of criminal elements.
A victim of rape from Saccha Khera in Narwana (Jind) immolated herself and died of her injuries, which is a matter of shame for the government and reflects the almost total absence of law and order in the state. Besides these, Harijans were targeted in Mirchpur district. All these incidents expose the hollowness of the claims made by the Congress government that it champions the cause of the depressed classes and the various welfare programs it has for them. The fact is that the backward classes are undergoing a nightmarish experience, and living in fear due to the misgovernance and apathetic attitude of the ruling class.
The people of the state were dissatisfied with the performance of the Hooda government even in its first term. He came to power again with a fractured mandate which was somehow cobbled together into a majority with the most shameless horse trading. Its performance in the second term has completely disillusioned the citizens of Haryana. The involvement of the minister of state for Home Affairs, Gopal Kanda, in the Geetika suicide case and the registration of a murder case by the sarpanch of Kambopura in Karnal district against two MLAs-Zile Ram Sharma and O.P. Hooda-shows that Bhupinder Singh Hooda does not mind taking support from such tainted elements. This government has forfeited its moral and legal right to rule over the state considering that hooligans of all sorts have a free run in Haryana and the people feel helpless and intimidated by criminals who remain at large after committing crimes.
