“NE of the prime reasons of growing Naxal terrorism in the country is the open permission to the capitalist forces to freely exploit the natural resources in Vanvasis areas. The foundation of economic development should not only be materialistic development. Its objective should be the welfare of the weakest persons of the society. All the claims of development will remain meaningless till there is unemployment and people are forced to sleep hungry,” said noted Gandhian thinker and former MP Dr Ramji Singh. He was releasing a book, A New Paradigm of Development Sumangalam, in New Delhi on April 10. The book, written by noted economist Dr Bajrang Lal Gupt, has been published by Gyan Publishing House.

Speaking on the occasion, former Union Minister Dr Subramanian Swamy said the materialistic development can never ensure peace in the life. “This is the reason the people in America, the most prosper nation of world, are moving around the Indian saints in search of peace. The western model of development has completely failed to satisfy the man. The development sans samskar and restrictions is meaningless. The family system in the US has collapsed. The old men are seeking refuse in old age homes. There is sharp increase in crimes. Nobody feels secure there. The consequences of increasing divorces are being faced by the new generation. Similarly the communism too has failed all over the world,” he added.

Senior journalist and columnist Dr Vedpratap Vaidik said both the communism and capitalism have failed to ensure all-round development of the humans. Russia has disintegrated and China is at the verge of disintegration. The economy of America too has collapsed resulting in large scale social unrest there. He said the prime reason of the failure of capitalist economy is that it is based on exploitation of others resources. Similarly, there is no place for human values in the communism. In such a situation only the Indian system of economic development can ensure sustainable development in the world today, he added.

Dr Bajrang Lal Gupt opposed the system of evaluating development on the basis of GDP, as it promotes consumerism. He also strongly opposed the merciless exploitation of the nature. “The development sans values, which is seen today due to wrong policies, has to be rejected and the all-round Sumangal concept, which ensures total happiness in life, has to be adopted. It will help in achieving all the four goals—food for all, all round development, equal opportunities for education and work for all.
