One day Guru Nanak Dev, the first guru of the Sikhs, started behaving strangely. Anyone who drew near him, was beaten up with a stick. Even his disciples were frightened of drawing near to him, in case he decided to beat them. His son Baba Budda and his disciple Bhai Lahna were watching his behaviour and decided to follow him in case he landed in trouble because of his strange behaviour. He walked out into the street with his stick in hand and when the street dogs barked at him, he beat them up fiercely. Seeing his strange behaviour, a crowd of people started following behind him.

They all walked for quite some distance and soon became tired and hungry. By now they had reached a cremation ground. A dead body lay covered in a white shroud. Guru Nanak Dev turned to the crowd and said, ?I can see that all of you are hungry. Here, I have a feast for you. Do you see this dead body? Start eating it as it will satisfy your hunger.?

The crowd of people began to look at each other wondering if Guru Nanak Dev had gone out of his mind. On seeing Guru Nanak Dev waiting to see them pounce upon the dead body and begin eating, the disciple Bhai Lahna said, ?Guru, we are not hungry so we do not want to eat.?

But Guru Nanak Dev was not the one to give in. He ordered, ?I command you to eat this body even if you are not hungry.?

The disciple asked, ?Guru, from which part of the body should I start eating? Should I begin by eating the head first or the feet??

Guru Nanak Dev ordered, ?Begin from the feet first.?

So Bhai Lahna went forward and removed a corner of the shroud near the feet to eat. But there was nothing there on the bier. So he turned towards Guru Nanak Dev and said, ?Guru but there is nothing here.?

Guru Nanak Dev moved forward and embracing Bhai Lahna, announced happily, I have found my true disciple. Despite not wanting to do what I wanted, you obeyed my orders, so I am very happy with you. From today onwards you shall be called Angad because I embraced you to my body and my body is an ang.?

As Guru Nanak Dev had become very old by then, he called Angad near him and said, ?Angad, take this five paisa and this coconut. From now on you will be may successor and known as Angad Dev. I order you to settle in Khadur and complete the work that I have begun.? So saying, Nanak left his body and this earth and Guru Angad became the second guru of the Sikhs.
