Nearly all the scriptures of the world contain a lot of wisdom to share. Their essential message is the same, though some of us may be tempted to draw boundaries around them. The author says that the fast-changing environment of today will change sooner or later. With the means of communication at our command, it is possible to have access to all of them and learn from them.

The book 21 Laws of Positive Living by Rakesh K. Mittal derives its contents from various scriptures, though mainly from the Bhagavad Gita which is of enduring value to all mankind. A significant feature of the text is that it inspires the reader to devote his attention to his assigned duty and stay dispassionate about it. This is in total opposition to the popular belief that all religious scriptures suggest ignoring the life of action in order to seek solace and peace.

Talking of the first law of human birth and evolution, the book clarifies that evolution is not an accident, but a logical development with its different stages. Making use of the life and its gifts available to us is positive living. We should not differentiate ourselves from Nature because it is the latter which has given us such powers that make life worthwhile. The book adivises us to follow Sri Aurobindo'sinstructions?if the process of inner development is continued with sustained effort, it is possible to achieve the state of super consciousness and become a superman.

Law of forgiveness states that he, who has not forgiven an enemy, has never yet tasted the most sublime enjoyment of life.

Law of patience states that one should have patience and never, for a moment, doubt one'sability to do the things one really wants to do. If we are patient in our moment of anger, we will escape a hundred days of sorrow.

The law of relationships states that relations are the most important aspect of our life. A man of wisdom lives in the world, but the world does not live in him. We must understand what this world is, so that it may not hurt us.

The social value system has changed for the worse so dramatically that the consequences have been far from happy. The degeneration has set in right from the individual level to the international level.

These laws may appear difficult or even impossible to some of us. That should not discourage us from trying them. We should give a try to these laws and take a few steps in the right direction. Gradually the process will become self-perpetuating with exponential growth in the joy of life.
