Militancy could create trouble in the forthcoming elections to the state legislative assembly in Tripura. Police fears that the extremists are likely to increase their level of violence in the run up to the election as they did in the pasts. It'stherefore testimony to the resolve of Tripura police to ensure an atmosphere in which elections are held peacefully.
Shri Krishna Trishuldhari Sing, the director general of Tripura police, admitted that his forces could not yet wipe out militancy but confirmed the commitment to do it gradually and surely one day. According to a report of the department, police is aware of the changing scenario in neighbouring Bangladesh where nothing much changed in terms of militancy. Extremists are still getting logistic support in that country. They are maintaining at least thirty training camps from where they are infiltrating armed cadres into Tripura by taking advantages of the gaps and unfinished sectors of border fencing.
According to a report ?Some attempts indeed have been made by militants, especially NLFT(National Liberation Front of Tripura) to recruit innocent villagers with the allurement of making them surrender after election and ensuring attractive rehabilitation package including job?. Some reports indicate that NLFT is raising a network of BNCT(Borok National Council of Tripura) by inducting villagers through such allurement.
The report outlined a broad strategy about the plan of activities of police that has to be followed to create an atmosphere in which people can exercise their franchise freely. It has decided to establish a large number of security camps before elections in addition to the existing 450 camps, out of which most are in the interior areas.
Anti-insurgency operations by forces would be increased tremendously setting up new camps in inhospitable ridges to flush the militants out. By massive operations, the DGP and his organisation are confident to make life difficult for them. The report also says that frustration runs high among the general members of the banned outfits, except some top leaders who are still in comfortable environment in Bangladesh.
It is to be mentioned here that as the February 2008 is coming nearer, the tension spots in the faces of the police officers in the state are getting clear. For their repeated demand in the recent months that extremist activities and movements decreased too much extent, they have to face the challenge. Election is expected to be held in February and if so, then, only around two months are left for final preparation. In this short time the forces have to design and implement the plans with strong determination to fight almost a war against the forces motivated to part Tripura from Indian union and create a separate independent nation.
