TWO prominent Awami League leaders of Bangladesh allegedly crossed over to Tripura on May 28 last. They are now under BSF custody. Both of them want political shelter in India because of ongoing heavy anti-corruption operation launched by the caretaker government in that country. Local newspapers reported that one of them is an ex-minister and was MP in the last parliament. The other is the general secretary of the youth wing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina'sparty. They were detained by BSF officials from sensitive Sonamura sub-division of Tripura. Detained leaders are Mirja Ajam (ex-minister and MP of Bangladesh) and Jahangir Kabir Nanak (GS of Juba League). Though neither police nor BSF confirmed the matter officially till today, according to the sources in the BSF, leaders are now kept in a secret place and they asked for political shelter in India. As both are top leaders in the neighbouring country, so government has taken the matter seriously and treatment is being done according to custom, not laws. When asked about it, the DSP in charge of police control (HQ) of Tripura police said that he got to know all about from newspaper reports. But no official information was available with him.
