?Entry of multi-national companies in retail trade will reduce the retailers of our country to the status of commission agents. The globalisation of trade and commerce will land the country into more problems,? said RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri K.S. Sudarshan while delivering the Vijayadashami speech in Nagpur on October 9.

Dr T.V. Narayan, member, Andhra Pradesh SC and ST Commission, presided over the function. Vidarbha Prant Sahsanghachalak Shri Shriram Joshi and Nagpur Mahanagar Sanghachalak Dr Dilip Gupta were also present on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion Dr Narayan recalled his association with Sewa Bharati and also with Shri Guruji and Shri Balasaheb Deoras. He appreciated the Swayamsevaks for working against untouchability.

Shri Sudarshan said to strengthen their stranglehold over India the British destroyed the autonomous panchayat units of our villages. ?They took away the rights enjoyed by the village panchayats one by one. For collecting revenue they appointed collectors, tahsildars and patwaris, for village protection they disbanded the local units and established their own system of police thanas. The right of dispersing justice was transferred to the district and taluka courts and because of this centralisation, millions of cases kept piling up and remained undecided for generations.

?Similarly, water resources, land and forests were declared belonging to the government. They were only given on lease to villagers. The decentralised system, which catered to the needs of a cluster of villages, was centralised thus reducing the villagers to the status of hewers of wood and drawers of water making them utterly poor and destitute from which the rural population of the country has not yet recovered,? he said.

The Sarsanghachalak further said: ?Whatever little freedom is left today, is also sought to be curbed by corporatisa-tion of agriculture. The retail trade in which about 45 million shopkeepers are engaged is sought to be encroached by the MNCs. Foreign multi-national companies are being allowed to start super bazaars where the retailers will be reduced to the status of commission agents. Even in the area of small and medium industries, the incentives given to the workers for excellence in their work, are sought to be taxed.?

He said the time had come to rethink about replacing the present form of government based on the centralised, urban oriented, high energy consum-ing, capital intensive and labour displacing dispensation with a decentralised, rural oriented, low energy consumpting, employing small capital and labour intensive order, where the autonomy of the family, the village community and their interdependence would be restored and the spiritual life-values streng-thened. ?Making optimum use of our resources, we should fulfill the basic needs of our society and reduce the dependency on foreign capital,? he added.
