Smuggling of Fake Currency

The insurgent outfits of Tripura are now importing fake notes into Tripura. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar stated in the Assembly on December 13, 2004 that the Biswamohan Deb Barma faction of National Liberation Front of Tripura possessed a superior quality printing machine for printing fake notes which looked exactly like real currency. The NLFT has its setup in Bangladesh. The Chief Minister revealed that a group of Divisional Preventive Customs raided a house of Harihardola village under Vishalgarh police station of west Tripura and confiscated a huge amount of fake Indian as well as foreign currencies. The village is next to the Bangladesh border.

Most of the border areas of Tripura are an open market for counterfeit currency. The state government of Tripura has appealed to the Reserve Bank of India to arrange for training local persons who can identify real and fake currency.
