International working President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Ashok Singhal, has termed the insult shown to renowned freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar, by Union Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyer, as treason. In a statement issued in New Delhi on August 27, he said that by removing the original plaque carrying Savarkar'squote from the memorial in Cellular Jail, the sin that Mani Shankar had committed had neither any penance nor was worthy of any excuse. ?The removal of such a minister from the cabinet is not enough punishment for the crime committed by insulting freedom fighters,? he said in the statement. He further said that the name of Veer Savarkar who had faced brutal atrocities of British government at the Cellular Jail, was inscribed in golden words in Andamans. ?He provided true history of 1857 freedom movement and also inspired countrymen to restore the pristine glory of the country,? he said.
