Grama Kovil Poojarigal Pervai (Village Temple Poojaris Forum), a wing of Tamil Nadu Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has been imparting training to village temple priests since 1990. So far it has conducted 23 camps of 25 days duration and 1879 poojaris have been trained.
The 24th training camp which began on June 23 at Sri Narayani Siddhar Peetam campus, Tirumalaikkodi village, near Vellore, concluded on July 7. Inaugurating the camp, Arulthiru Shakthi Amma, head of Om Shakthi Narayani Siddhar Peetam, said that culture was the basis of every religion and it had its roots in villages. ?People living in cities and towns are living like machines. They are worshipping in temples in busy atmospheres. But people in villages worship in a peaceful atmosphere,? he said, warning people against the dangers of cable TV which have been spreading an alien culture in the country. He advised priests to perform pooja according to Agma Shastras and protect the culture and dharma. He said the Grama Kovil Poojarigal Pervai was doing a very useful service to the society by conducting the Agama Pooja training camps for village temple priests.
Speaking on the occasion, S. Vedantam, vice president, VHP said that the life of Hindus was linked with temples and sanctity of the temples was based on the proper mode of pooja performed by the priests who work as a link between the deity and the devotee. Shri Vedantam pointed out that there were six lakh village priests who were working without proper recognition. ?Because of the effort of priests the lamp of learning is burning in many village temples. By this service Grama Kovil Poojarigal Peravai has created a spiritual revolution in Tamil Nadu,? he said.
