The Assam Shishu Shiksha Samiti, a Vidya Bharati unit in north-east, has taken up an Akshardan Abhiyan in the rural areas to celebrate its silver jubilee. During the campaign, efforts will be made to make every villager literate in six months time. The Samiti has belied the popular belief that good education can be imparted only through English. It has proved that good education can be imparted only in the mother tongue. The prestigious positions held by the Samiti'sschool-children in this year'sAssam secondary examination have proved it to be so. The Samiti runs more than 1,100 schools in the north-eastern states. There are over 700 such schools in Assam alone. The Samiti'swork in north-east began in 1979 with the foundation of a school called Shankerdev Shishu Niketan. A Bal Vidya Mandir was also founded in Imphal (Manipur) the same year. The schools are part of the Saraswati Shishu Mandir scheme of Vidya Bharati. The Samiti'swork grew steadily during the first 12 years and during this period 29 schools were founded. But from 1993 to 2004, the number of schools grew up to 455, excluding the 115 single-teacher schools. The schools were established in Meghalaya in 1993 while work in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram began in 1994, 1995, 1999 and 2002 respectively. There are nursery, primary, secondary and senior secondary schools. The next aim is to start colleges and girls? schools also during the silver jubilee year.
