WHATEVER may be the outcome of the elections, the pendulum may swing in favour of the UDF or the LDF, Kerala will not be the same again. A sea change is likely in the political alignments in Kerala, as elsewhere, in India. The socio-economic scenario also may undergo a sea change in keeping with the spirit of the overall change. In all likelihood the state would move fast backwards and find itself enfolded in another spell of gloom. There will be more suicidal deaths and the state”s economy will drift to an all-time low.

The duo-Karunakaran and Antony-is responsible for this sorry state of affairs. Still, Karunakaran is proud like a Lucifer, while Antony, as always, is docile and submissive, as a nanny. Together they blasted all the high hopes of the people, who elected the UDF government in the hope that it would deliver. The people had a nightmarish existence before this with an anarchical ambience under the LDF rule, which had as its motto “a government of the party, by the party and for the party.” The rest were all mere rejects, doomed to a grey existence.

The people had voted the UDF to power with high hopes, and it was those fond hopes that the duo has blasted. The statement of Velliyam Bhargavan that after the election the UDF government would fall and that there will be an erosion of its strength is not illogical. If it comes true, the blame can be laid at the doors of Karunakaran and Antony-the former for his grubbing to grab the power-and the latter for his inaction, ineptitude and inefficiency, blessed by an equally effete and effeminate High Command.

In Karunakaran the intellectual class saw the triumphal ballooning of a small mind. It has now seen the bursting of that colourful balloon, when he constricted his political ambition and settled for a Rajya Sabha seat for himself and a political space for his children on whom he has acrimoniously and ceremoniously thrust upon some greatness. There are those “who kiss the shadows and they do get but the shadow”s bliss.” Greatness thrust upon anyone will fade away in no time, as no small mind clothed in big authorities will stand the test of time. The recent statement of Murali against the government of which he himself is today a part, only showcases the fact that his top story bears the placard ?to let?. He could only bask in the sunshine of his father who is a falling star today. An irresolute High Command, a Hamletian Antony-playing the waiting game, and a power-hungry Karunakaran, ever ready to enter into any pact even with Satan, like the Faustus, have proved to be the bane of Kerala today. God save this country which is God”s own.
