S.G. Subramaniam, popularly known as SG in the RSS circles, passed away in Chennai on December 31 after a severe heart attack. Shri Subramaniam was a leading lawyer at Tirunelveli. He came in contact with the RSS while he was in college and remained a staunch swayamsevak till his last breath. S.G. Subramaniam was the Prant Karyavah of RSS Tamil Nadu from 1966 to 1977. He participated in the Satyagraha during the first ban (1948-49) and later came out as Pracharak in Chennai. He also underwent imprisonment during 1975-77 as a MISA detenue.
He associated himself with the initiative of Ma. Eknathji Ranade to raise a memorial for Swami Vivekananda at Kanyakumari and served the organisation in various capacities. He also played a crucial role in re-converting hundreds of Catholic fishermen families at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district to their parent faith during the late sixties. Since 1977 he had been Sanghchalak of that district.
