New Delhi: Manipuri civil society bodies and ABVP Northeast Cell strongly condemned the killing of a music teacher from Manipur. The incident took place on September 6, when a Manipuri music teacher was beaten to death by a group of men in the Ashram area of Delhi. The shocking incident has left the Northeastern community in the city shocked and angry.

Following the incident, members of the Manipuri and wider Northeastern community living nearby gathered outside the Sunlight Police Station in protest. They alleged that police were initially reluctant to register a First Information Report (FIR), forcing residents to push for the case to be formally taken up.

Arunoday, the Northeast Cell of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), issued a strong statement condemning the killing. The organisation called the attack senseless and said no one should lose their life simply for asking others to maintain peace and basic civic discipline. It urged the authorities to act quickly, conduct a fair investigation, and ensure that everyone involved is held accountable under the law. They met DCP South Delhi Vineet Kumar and submitted a memorandum.

The victim, Chongtham Vikram, a Meitei musician who taught music, was reportedly attacked by six to seven men who came to his house after he asked them to stop making noise late at night outside a dhaba across from his home. The men, said to be under the influence of alcohol, allegedly assaulted him so severely that he later succumbed to his injuries.

Community members pointed out that this is not an isolated case. They said several crimes targeting people from the Northeast have been reported in the Ashram area over the past year, including the deaths of a few young men earlier this year, raising fresh concerns about the safety of Northeastern residents in the locality.

Several Manipuri civil society organisations have also condemned the killing, describing it as a brutal and unacceptable act of violence, and have joined calls for swift police action against those responsible.

All Northeastern organisations  also expressed solidarity with Vikram’s family and the broader Northeastern community, calling for unity, accountability and justice at what it described as a moment of deep grief. It extended its condolences to the bereaved family.
