Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader and former international working president S. Vedantham passed away in Chennai on August 29, 2026, due to age-related health issues. He was 93.
Vedantham was one of the pioneers of VHP work in Tamil Nadu and served as its international working president. He dedicated his life to safeguarding Hindu religion and worked to strengthen its presence globally among Hindus living abroad. He had described his life’s goal as “doing this as a Nithya karma during my last breath”.
Shri S. Vedantam, Born in Kollam, Kerala, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at age 16 in 1949. He worked as an accountant for the TVS group before quitting his job to become a full-time VHP worker in 1970/1972.

Born in 1933 in Kollam, Kerala, to Srinivasa Iyer and Sundari Ammal, Vedantham came from a wealthy family. His father was an industrialist who owned a cashew production business. Vedantham joined the RSS at the age of 16.
In recognition of his dedication to service, Guruji Golwalkar, the then RSS Sarsanghchalak, appointed Vedantham as the District Secretary of RSS in Tirunelveli. He remained associated with the nationalist endeavour for more than 75 years.
After completing his graduation in commerce, Vedantham joined a private company as an accountant. At the same time, he worked as a district RSS karyawah and began his service to Hindu society and the nationalist movement in 1950. He later became a full-time pracharak and underwent various training programmes. He worked as a pracharak in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts.
Vedantham subsequently became involved in the VHP and served as its state organising secretary in Tamil Nadu, international vice-president and later international working president, besides holding several other positions.
In 1967, he was instrumental in bringing thousands of Christians back to the Hindu fold at Idinthakarai, a fishermen’s hamlet in Tirunelveli district.
In 1975, he started a Hindu Vidyalaya in West Mambalam with nine students. The initiative has since grown into Vishwa Vidya Hindu Kendra, with 16 schools and around 14,000 students. The institutions impart Hindu culture and traditions to students.
The same year, he launched Hindu Mitran, an official VHP publication in Tamil covering Hindu culture, traditions and RSS news. The publication continues to be brought out regularly.
In 1982, Vedantham launched Gnana Ratham and Sakthi Ratham to create awareness among the public about spiritual faith and equality in Hindu society. The two Hindu religious outreach vehicles travelled through villages across Tamil Nadu, spreading spiritual beliefs and religious awareness.
In October 1986, he launched a padayatra with mutt heads, sadhus and sanyasins demanding that the government exit from the management of temples. The 30-day padayatra covered thousands of kilometres and included 32 major public meetings en route and 96 village-level meetings.
Vedantham also focused on village-level poojaris, whom he considered the roots of spiritual faith and an important link between devotees and temple worship. In 1990, he founded the Village Pujaris Peravai, an initiative that organised more than 100,000 village temple poojaris.
The organisation conducted simple agama training for poojaris and held 55 training camps, benefiting more than 8,000 poojaris. The initiative also sought to strengthen the economic position of village poojaris serving kula deivam and small temples.
The federation conducted 10 state-level conferences for village poojaris, which were attended by former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi. His efforts also contributed to the Tamil Nadu government forming a welfare board for village poojaris and providing them with a monthly pension. He also worked for the welfare of temple florists (malakari) and soothsayers.
Vedantham spearheaded the Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, through which more than 1,000 single-teacher schools (Ekal Vidyalayas) were established. The organisation also undertook relief work during major disasters, including the 2004 tsunami.
He started the Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission, which provided medical care at Serakulam. The Shanmuga Velayudutham Medical Centre has been functioning for the past 50 years.
In Chennai, he founded Kola Sarawathi Multi-Speciality Hospital jointly with Agarwal Samaj and established a clinical laboratory at Apparao Gardens.
Through the Hindu Dharmic Samithi Trust, umbrellas are donated every year to the Tirumala deity during the annual festival. The umbrellas are taken in a procession to the Tirumala hills, an initiative that has continued for more than 20 years.
Union Minister L. Murugan and other political leaders condoled Vedantham’s demise.
His last rites will be held on August 30 at 3 pm. His mortal remains have been kept at Jayagopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Secondary School in West Mambalam for the public to pay their last respects.
