India’s electric vehicle (EV) exports recorded a sharp rise in the first quarter of FY2026-27, with exports of electric motor cars jumping more than 16-fold in value year-on-year, according to Department of Commerce data. Export earnings from electric cars reached $369 million during April-June 2026, compared with just $22.2 million in the corresponding period a year earlier.
The surge was also visible in shipment volumes. Indian automakers exported 10,802 electric cars during the quarter, compared with 1,309 units in April-June 2025, marking a 7.6-fold increase. The figures point to rapidly expanding international demand for Made-in-India electric vehicles and a widening footprint for India’s emerging EV manufacturing industry.
Europe drives India’s electric-car export boom
Europe emerged as the largest destination for Indian electric cars, accounting for a substantial share of the country’s export growth. The region’s strong demand helped establish India-made EVs in several advanced international markets, while also signalling increasing integration of Indian manufacturers into global electric-mobility supply chains.
The latest performance follows a strong FY2025-26, when India’s annual electric-car exports increased eightfold to $701 million, compared with $77.9 million in FY2024-25. The first-quarter performance of FY2026-27 therefore represents a further acceleration in India’s overseas EV business.

The broader automobile export sector also recorded growth during the quarter. Overall motor-vehicle exports increased 15 per cent to $2.87 billion, with electric mobility contributing an increasingly visible share of India’s international automobile trade.
Beyond Europe, Indian electric cars also expanded their presence across the Asia-Pacific, West Asia and Latin American markets. Japan imported EVs worth $13.4 million, while neighbouring Nepal accounted for $8.1 million. Exports also reached Israel at $2.8 million, Australia at $2.7 million, Singapore at $1.7 million, Taiwan at $1.3 million and South Korea.
Latin American markets also featured in India’s expanding EV export map, with shipments worth $2.4 million to Brazil, $1 million to Colombia, $0.4 million to Chile and $0.5 million to Costa Rica.
The widening geographical spread indicates that India’s electric-car exports are moving beyond a limited regional market and gaining access to increasingly diverse international destinations. The sharp increase in both value and volume strengthens India’s position as an emerging manufacturing base for electric mobility and demonstrates the growing global acceptance of Made-in-India EVs.
