India’s student movement has never been confined merely to student union elections or academic demands. From the freedom struggle to the safeguarding of democratic values, social transformation and nation-building, students have consistently played an active role. In this context, it is natural to ask: what is the relevance of student organisations in an era of changing times, emerging dimensions of education, the technological revolution and global competition? If a student organization adapts itself to the needs of society and the nation while striking a balance between student interests and national obligations, its relevance becomes self-evident.
From this perspective, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) stands as a highly relevant student movement in India, one that has aligned itself with the times while successfully uniting the entire student community.
Established on July 9, 1949, the ABVP has, from its inception, championed the vision of viewing “student power” as “national power.” The Parishad believes that a student is not merely a citizen of the future but an aware and responsible citizen of the present. Consequently, student life is not just a period for obtaining a degree; it is a crucial phase for personality development, the fostering of social consciousness and the cultivation of a sense of national responsibility. This philosophy is reflected in the Parishad’s core motto: “Knowledge, Character, and Unity.”
The primary basis for the ABVP’s relevance lies in its view that student interests and national interests are not contradictory but complementary. The organization has remained consistently active on issues such as quality education, transparent examination systems, timely declaration of results, scholarships, hostel facilities, libraries, research, skill development, employment-oriented education, innovation and startups. Its modus operandi involves raising student issues in universities through democratic means and seeking solutions via both dialogue and when necessary, agitation. However, the ABVP is not an organization limited merely to making demands or staging protests; its greatest strength is its constructive approach. The Parishad believes that students should not merely be critics of society but active participants in bringing about change. With this mindset, the organization has also established an active presence in various spheres of social life beyond educational campuses.
The Council’s diverse dimensions and activities reflect this broad vision. Through ‘Students for Development’ (SFD), work is undertaken in areas such as environmental conservation, water preservation, biodiversity, sustainable development and environmental awareness. ‘Students for Seva’ (SFS) fosters a sense of social responsibility among students by extending education, healthcare and service activities to the underprivileged sections of society.
The ‘Khelo Bharat’ campaign promotes a sports culture, discipline and a healthy lifestyle among the youth, while the ‘Rashtriya Kala Manch’ works to connect the new generation with Indian art, literature, music, theatre and folk traditions. Furthermore, initiatives like ‘Agrivision’, ‘Medivision’, ‘Farmvision’, ‘Jigyasa’, ‘Think India’ and ‘Indigenous’ clearly demonstrate that the Vidyarthi Parishad prioritizes the holistic development of students.
Women’s empowerment is also a crucial aspect of the Council’s work. It has launched numerous campaigns aimed at ensuring the safety of female students, fostering leadership skills, providing equal opportunities in education and boosting self-confidence. Programs like ‘Mission Sahasi’ have sought to make female students self-reliant and confident by providing them with self-defense training. Today, a large number of female students hold leadership roles within the Council’s organizational structure, a testament to its inclusive work culture.
The education sector is currently facing new challenges. Issues such as artificial intelligence, digital technology, global competition, mental health, employment, startup culture and research are shaping the future of students. In such times, student activities limited merely to examinations and degrees are insufficient. There is a need for multifaceted student engagement that plays an active role in broader areas like educational reform, innovation, social sensitivity, environmental conservation and national development. The Vidyarthi Parishad has consistently endeavored to foster dialogue and raise public awareness regarding these issues.
India is moving forward with the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The youth will play a pivotal role in achieving this objective. It is the need of the hour for universities and colleges to evolve beyond being mere institutions that award degrees for employment, transforming instead into centers of character building, leadership, research and social responsibility. When student organizations play a positive role in this regard, they strengthen both democracy and society.
The relevance of any student movement is also determined by how well it understands the challenges of the times and contributes to their resolution. Over a journey spanning more than seven decades, the Vidyarthi Parishad has witnessed numerous ups and downs, yet it has not limited itself to being merely an electoral student organization. By remaining active in diverse fields such as education, social service, organizational building, value inculcation, social harmony, environmental conservation, cultural consciousness and nation-building, it has presented a comprehensive definition of a student movement.
Today, as the Indian education system undergoes a transformation and the youth power is poised to become the pivot of the resolve for a developed India, there is an increasing need for, and responsibility upon, student movements that foster not only an awareness of rights among students but also a sense of duty, leadership, character and patriotism. This is precisely why the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) continues to maintain its identity as a relevant, active and constructive student movement.
