In a historic first for India, Madhya Pradesh has set a new milestone in renewable energy by announcing solar project tariffs below Rs 3 per unit for upcoming projects in Morena, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on September 20.
What makes the Morena project unique is its solar-plus-storage model, which ensures an annual supply availability of 95 percent, a first for India. Unlike existing renewable energy projects that typically provide only 50 percent peak-hour availability and around 85 percent annual availability, Morena’s facility has been designed for round-the-clock dependability.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav explained that each of the project’s units will provide 220 MW of power during the day from solar panels and in the evening peak hours from batteries charged with solar energy.
In the mornings, before solar panels begin charging, the units will draw power from the same batteries that are recharged using cheaper night-time grid electricity, further optimising costs and supply reliability.
Officials described the Morena project as laying the foundation for future renewable projects designed to deliver flat-profile electricity throughout the day and night. Such a design aims to bring renewable energy on par with conventional thermal power plants in terms of certainty, reliability, and commercial viability.
“By combining solar panels with advanced battery storage, we are not only cutting tariffs but also ensuring that renewable energy can be dispatched like traditional power. This is a game-changer for India’s energy future,” a senior energy department official said.

The achievement shows Madhya Pradesh’s growing role as a national leader in energy innovation. Under CM Mohan Yadav’s leadership, the state has aggressively pursued renewable projects, positioning itself at the heart of India’s transition to clean energy.

The Morena Solar-Plus-Storage facility is being closely watched as a benchmark project for India’s energy sector. The Morena solar breakthrough comes just days after Madhya Pradesh also surged ahead in the execution of the PM MITRA Park in Dhar, which has become the fastest-progressing textile hub among seven approved nationwide. Together, these projects highlight how the state government is combining industrial growth with sustainable development.
With large-scale investments flowing into both textiles and renewable energy, officials say Madhya Pradesh is setting a model for other states by aligning economic expansion with green growth.

“Similar projects so far have ensured only about 50 percent peak hours availability and 85 percent annual availability. With Morena, India is entering a new era where renewable energy can be treated as firm power,” the official release noted.
As India seeks to achieve its ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, projects like Morena will be crucial in ensuring that clean energy is not just abundant, but also dependable and affordable for all.
