Islamic fundamentalist and the chief of banned outfit- Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik has been framed by the special TADA court in connection with the abduction case of Rubaiya Sayeed. Rubaiya, the daughter of former Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was kidnapped in 1989 by Yasin Malik and his associates. This was the period of rising Islamic militancy in Kashmir valley, followed by the massive exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the group conspired to kidnap Rubaiya Sayeed, who was interning at Lal Ded Hospital, Srinagar, to demand the release of their associates. Sayeed was kidnapped on December 8, 1989, and was released on December 13. The TADA court had also filed charges against Malik and six others for the alleged murder of four Indian Air Force (IAF) officials in 1990. Malik is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
Malik’s outfit JKLF was banned by the Centre in 2019, in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack. The action was initiated against a number of separatist organisations in the Valley under Section 3 of the anti-terror law.
