ROURKELA: Delivering a strong statement on its research credentials, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has secured global recognition, with 29 faculty members and one PhD graduate featuring in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2 per cent Scientists List for 2026. The achievement highlights the institute’s growing research footprint across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, placing its scholars among researchers whose work has attracted significant international attention.
The prestigious database, prepared by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis of Stanford University and his research team, is published by Elsevier and made available through the Elsevier Data Repository. It identifies scientists based on the impact of their research, using a composite indicator that considers citation counts, co-authorship adjustments and authorship positions. The assessment covers both career-long contributions and single-year research impact.
Unlike recognition based solely on academic titles or institutional affiliations, the ranking draws on measurable research indicators, including total citations and the h-index, which reflects both the productivity and citation impact of a researcher’s published work. The methodology aims to provide a broader picture of a scientist’s influence within their respective field.
The 29 NIT Rourkela faculty members recognised in the list represent a wide range of disciplines, including Life Sciences, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Ceramic Engineering, Food Process Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Civil Engineering, and Mining Engineering.
The breadth of representation underscores the institute’s research activity across fundamental sciences, emerging technologies and applied engineering. The recognition also reflects the importance of sustained scholarly output and international research visibility in strengthening an institution’s academic standing.
Adding to the achievement, Dr. Srimanta Patra, a PhD graduate of NIT Rourkela who currently serves as a DST-INSPIRE Faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has also made it to the list. His inclusion extends the institute’s research recognition beyond its current faculty and highlights the contributions of its academic alumni.
NIT Rourkela Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao described the recognition as a proud moment for the institute, crediting the achievement to the quality, consistency and global relevance of its research.
Congratulating the recognised scholars, Rao said their dedication and commitment to advancing knowledge had contributed to the institute’s standing and expressed confidence that their work would continue to inspire students and young researchers.
The institute further reported that 19 researchers had been recognised in the career-long category of the Stanford Top 2 per cent Scientists 2026 list, reflecting their sustained contributions and influence in research and academia.
NIT Rourkela is among India’s prominent government-funded technical institutions. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, it secured the 13th position in Engineering, 34th overall, 30th in Research and seventh in Architecture and Planning. It also ranked ninth in the Sustainable Development Goals category.
Spread across a 262-hectare residential campus, the institute offers academic and research facilities across a broad range of disciplines.
The latest recognition adds to NIT Rourkela’s academic credentials at a time when research output, citation impact and international visibility have become important indicators of institutional performance. With 30 scholars featured in the single-year list and 19 researchers recognised in the career-long category, the institute has highlighted the contributions of its researchers to the global academic community.
