The Pentagon is deploying a third US aircraft carrier strike group to West Asia, adding thousands of personnel to the American military presence in the region as President Donald Trump weighs whether to intensify military action against Iran following the November midterm elections.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt and its carrier strike group departed San Diego on September 27 and are expected to reach the region by the end of November, according to the reports. The deployment could involve between 9,000 and 10,000 additional US service members. A separate amphibious group carrying more than 2,000 Marines has also departed for the region.

It remains unclear whether the Theodore Roosevelt will reinforce the existing American naval presence or eventually relieve one of the carriers already operating in the region. The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are currently operating in the Arabian Sea in support of US operations against Iran.

Pentagon expands Naval presence as Iran tensions persist

The George Washington, normally based in Yokosuka, Japan, entered the region in August after replacing the USS Abraham Lincoln. The Roosevelt’s deployment would potentially bring three US carrier strike groups into the region at the same time.

The Pentagon has also prepared the Theodore Roosevelt for a potentially extended deployment. Navy leadership said additional stocks of food, hygiene products, retail supplies and other essentials were being loaded before departure. Measures were also taken to improve communications with sailors’ families and living conditions aboard the carrier.

“That means new entertainment equipment on the mess decks, more durable fitness equipment, spare cardio machines ready for our placement, and even holiday materials purchased ahead of time,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle said in a video announcement last month.

The preparations followed reports of deteriorating conditions during the Abraham Lincoln’s lengthy deployment amid disruptions to regional supply lines. The Navy has also faced pressure over the strain of prolonged deployments during the conflict.

The latest deployment comes after Trump rejected Iran’s proposed seven-day cease-fire last week, describing the offer as unacceptable. Tehran had indicated that it would open the Strait of Hormuz during the proposed pause. US officials, however, have maintained that American forces are already moving oil through the strategically important waterway.

The deployment adds another major US naval formation to West Asia as Washington weighs its next military and diplomatic steps towards Iran.
