Aban Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a high-speed road accident
Jhansi: Aban Ahmed, the youngest son of slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed in a tragic road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi on Wednesday after the speeding SUV he was travelling in crashed into a highway divider. Another occupant of the vehicle, identified as Sonu, also died in the accident, while three others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.
According to police, Aban was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi along with four others to meet his elder brother, Ali Ahmed, who is lodged in the Jhansi District Jail. The vehicle reportedly lost control at high speed before smashing into a roadside median. The impact of the collision was so severe that the front portion of the vehicle was completely mangled.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jhansi, said both Aban Ahmed and Sonu suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The three injured occupants were shifted to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, and further details are awaited.
The incident adds another dramatic chapter to the turbulent history of the Ahmed family.
Ali Ahmed, Atiq Ahmed’s eldest surviving son, has been lodged in Jhansi jail since October 2025 after being shifted from Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj. He has been in judicial custody since surrendering in an extortion case and is also an accused in the February 2023 murder of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. Investigators have alleged that the conspiracy to kill Umesh Pal was orchestrated from inside prison.
Following the killing of Atiq Ahmed, Ali is believed by investigators to have taken charge of the criminal syndicate allegedly operated by the family.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead on April 15, 2023, by three assailants posing as journalists while they were being escorted by police for a medical examination in Prayagraj. The brazen killing, which unfolded live before television cameras, drew nationwide attention and marked the end of one of Uttar Pradesh’s most notorious criminal-political careers.
Atiq Ahmed, a former MP and multiple-time MLA, faced over 100 criminal cases, including charges of murder, extortion, kidnapping and land grabbing. His family has remained under the scanner of law enforcement agencies in connection with several criminal investigations.
