Telegram groups used to guide Bangladeshi infiltration; Probe exposes online networks sharing border-crossing tips

Investigative agencies have uncovered online groups allegedly being used to facilitate illegal infiltration into India by sharing guidance on border crossings, language training and methods to evade detection. The development has renewed concerns over border security, organised illegal immigration networks and the misuse of encrypted messaging platforms

Fresh investigations have brought to light online Telegram groups allegedly being used to facilitate illegal entry into India by sharing border-crossing guidance, language training and advice on blending into local communities. Investigators say the groups are part of a wider network that assists undocumented infiltrators in navigating the infiltration process and avoiding detection after entering the country.

Authorities have reportedly taken action against some of these networks as part of ongoing operations targeting illegal immigration and organised facilitation channels.

According to investigators, several Telegram channels contained content claiming to explain methods of entering India illegally, including posts and videos carrying titles such as “How to Enter India” and “101 Ways to Bypass Indian Security.”

Officials suspect that these groups were not merely discussion forums but were actively sharing information that could aid illegal border crossings and settlement inside the country. While authorities are examining the extent of these networks, the investigation has highlighted the increasing use of encrypted messaging platforms by organised facilitators.

The probe has also revealed that some groups allegedly circulated basic Hindi lessons and practical guidance intended to help illegal entrants communicate more effectively after crossing the border. Investigators believe such material was designed to help individuals integrate into local communities and reduce the chances of being identified during routine verification drives.

Authorities are examining whether these efforts were coordinated by organised agents involved in cross-border migration networks.

Security agencies are also investigating whether online channels were linked to intermediaries who allegedly arranged transport, temporary accommodation and forged identity documents after illegal entry. Previous police investigations in other cases have found that illegal migrants often relied on networks of agents and messaging platforms to coordinate border crossings and subsequent movement within India.

Officials have long maintained that India’s eastern border remains vulnerable because of its length and varied terrain, making surveillance a continuous challenge despite extensive fencing and deployment of the Border Security Force.

Recent investigations involving undocumented migrants have also highlighted the role of middlemen in facilitating illegal crossings and helping migrants obtain documents after entering the country.

The latest findings have once again drawn attention to the misuse of encrypted communication platforms. While Telegram itself is a legitimate messaging application used by millions globally for lawful communication, security experts have repeatedly warned that encrypted platforms can also be exploited by criminal networks because of their private channels and large-group capabilities. Investigations are focused on specific channels allegedly engaged in illegal activity and not on the platform as a whole.

Authorities are also examining whether individuals associated with these online groups may have participated in unlawful activities after entering India. However, investigators have not publicly stated that membership of these Telegram groups by itself establishes involvement in any crime. Any such links would require evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation.

The revelations have renewed debate over the need for stronger border management, enhanced digital surveillance of organised criminal networks operating online within the framework of law, and closer coordination among central and state agencies. Experts argue that tackling illegal immigration requires a combination of physical border infrastructure, intelligence-led operations, document verification, prosecution of trafficking and facilitation networks, and cooperation with neighbouring countries.

Government agencies continue to conduct verification drives in several states to identify foreign nationals residing illegally in India and to initiate legal proceedings wherever violations are established. The Ministry of External Affairs has also stated that India follows an established bilateral mechanism with Bangladesh for verifying nationality and deporting foreign nationals found to be residing illegally in the country.

The investigation into the Telegram-based facilitation networks remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to determine the full scale of the operation, identify those responsible for administering the channels, and assess whether they were linked to larger organised cross-border infiltration networks.
