India’s battle against malnutrition has entered a new digital era. For decades, nutrition interventions across the country relied heavily on manual records, delayed reporting systems and fragmented monitoring mechanisms. While large welfare programmes existed, obtaining real-time information about beneficiaries and service delivery remained a challenge. Today, that landscape is changing rapidly through Poshan Tracker, a technology-driven platform that is reshaping the way nutrition services are monitored and delivered across India.
Developed as the digital backbone of POSHAN Abhiyaan, the Government of India’s flagship nutrition mission, Poshan Tracker enables near real-time monitoring of beneficiaries, growth indicators, supplementary nutrition delivery and Anganwadi services. By integrating technology with grassroots implementation, the platform has created a data-driven governance model that allows authorities to identify nutritional challenges quickly and respond with targeted interventions.
As of May 2026, Poshan Tracker had registered more than 8.93 crore beneficiaries across the country and achieved complete coverage across all 28 States and eight Union Territories. Its scale, reach and functionality have made it one of the world’s largest digital nutrition monitoring systems and a key pillar of India’s efforts to build a healthier and better-nourished population.
POSHAN Abhiyaan and the Push for Nutrition Security
The story of Poshan Tracker is closely linked to the evolution of India’s flagship nutrition mission. POSHAN Abhiyaan, or the Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment, was launched on March 8, 2018, with the objective of reducing malnutrition and improving nutrition outcomes among children, pregnant women, lactating mothers and adolescent girls.
The mission marked a significant shift in public policy. Rather than treating nutrition merely as a welfare concern, the government positioned it as a critical component of national development. The programme adopted a multi-sectoral approach, bringing together different ministries and departments under a unified framework while emphasising convergence, technology-driven monitoring and community participation through a Jan Andolan model.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development was entrusted with leading the initiative, which introduced measurable targets and greater accountability in nutrition governance. In the Union Budget 2021-22, the government further strengthened this approach by integrating POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls into a single umbrella programme called Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
The restructured mission expanded the scope of nutrition interventions by combining nutrition support, early childhood education, infrastructure development and digital monitoring into a comprehensive framework aimed at addressing malnutrition throughout the life cycle.
Why a Digital Monitoring Platform Became Necessary
Before the introduction of Poshan Tracker, Anganwadi Workers relied on a largely manual system of maintaining records. Each worker was required to manage as many as eleven different registers containing information related to beneficiaries, growth monitoring, nutrition services and programme implementation.
This process was time-consuming and often resulted in delays in data compilation and analysis. Information collected at the grassroots level took considerable time to reach district, state and national authorities, limiting the ability of policymakers to respond swiftly to emerging challenges. Home visits and counselling sessions depended significantly on individual experience and local practices, leading to variations in service quality and implementation.
The absence of a robust beneficiary verification system also created challenges in ensuring accurate records and effective targeting of services. Policymakers recognised that achieving meaningful progress in nutrition outcomes required a modern digital platform capable of providing timely and reliable information.
To address these challenges, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, in collaboration with the National e-Governance Division, launched Poshan Tracker in March 2021 under Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0. The platform was designed to digitise nutrition governance and create a unified monitoring system capable of supporting evidence-based decision-making at every level of administration.
Building a Digital Backbone for Nutrition Governance
Poshan Tracker functions as a mobile-based governance application that captures and analyses information related to Anganwadi infrastructure, beneficiary registration, growth monitoring and service delivery. Through smartphones provided to Anganwadi Workers, data from the field is uploaded directly to the platform and becomes available through real-time dashboards accessible to district, state and national authorities.
The system enables administrators to monitor service delivery, identify gaps and take corrective action without waiting for lengthy reporting cycles. By replacing paper-based processes with digital reporting, Poshan Tracker has significantly improved transparency, accountability and efficiency across the nutrition ecosystem.
The platform has also introduced a level of data visibility that was previously difficult to achieve. Real-time dashboards and analytical tools provide insights into nutritional trends, beneficiary coverage and programme performance, enabling governments to allocate resources more effectively and target interventions where they are needed most.
Technology Features Strengthening Service Delivery
A major strength of Poshan Tracker lies in its integration of advanced technological features that support frontline workers and improve programme implementation.
One of the most significant innovations is Aadhaar-based beneficiary verification. By authenticating beneficiary identities, the platform helps eliminate duplicate records and ghost entries while ensuring that benefits reach genuine recipients. This has strengthened transparency and enhanced confidence in programme data.
The application also incorporates a Facial Recognition System that supports last-mile authentication and service delivery monitoring. The feature helps verify beneficiary participation and strengthens accountability in programme implementation.
Another important component is the IT-enabled home visit scheduler. The system automatically plans and tracks structured home visits by Anganwadi Workers, ensuring timely counselling and support for families. A total of 23 scheduled visits are integrated into the application, covering pregnancy, the post-partum period and the early years of a child’s life. The platform provides age-specific counselling prompts and guidance, helping standardise service delivery across different regions.
Growth monitoring has also become more accurate through the Poshan Calculator, which uses World Health Organisation child growth standards. The tool analyses a child’s age, height, weight and gender to assess nutritional status and classify children across categories such as stunting, underweight, wasting, severe acute malnutrition, moderate acute malnutrition and obesity. By automating calculations, the platform reduces human error and ensures consistency in assessments.
The application further includes a Poshan Helpline accessible through the toll-free number 1515, providing a mechanism for grievance redressal and beneficiary support.
Beyond Nutrition: Supporting Early Childhood Development
Poshan Tracker is not limited to monitoring nutritional outcomes. It also plays an important role in supporting Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), reflecting the broader objectives of Mission Poshan 2.0.
The platform provides Anganwadi Workers with access to a rich library of educational resources, including 249 videos, 190 voice notes and 159 activity-based learning modules. These resources are aligned with Aadharshila, the National Curriculum for Early Childhood Care and Education launched in March 2024 for children aged three to six years.
Aadharshila emphasises play-based learning and seeks to promote cognitive, emotional, social and physical development through activities such as storytelling, music, art and games. The curriculum aims to prepare children for formal schooling while nurturing holistic development during their formative years.
By integrating educational content directly into the application, Poshan Tracker supports not only nutrition goals but also broader child development outcomes.
Empowering Anganwadi Workers Through Digital Tools
The success of Poshan Tracker depends significantly on the effectiveness of India’s Anganwadi workforce. Recognising this, the government has invested in equipping Anganwadi Workers with the tools necessary to operate within a digital ecosystem.
All Anganwadi Workers have been provided smartphones to facilitate data entry and service monitoring. The government also supports internet connectivity costs by providing an annual allowance of ₹2,000 per worker. In addition, Growth Monitoring Devices have been supplied to Anganwadi Centres to ensure accurate measurement of height and weight.
These measures have reduced administrative burdens and enabled frontline workers to spend more time interacting with beneficiaries. Digital tools have streamlined reporting processes while improving the quality and reliability of data collected from the field.
To ensure effective implementation, the government adopted a “Train the Trainer” model supported by state-level coordinators, capacity-building programmes and regular virtual reviews. This approach has helped build digital literacy among frontline workers and ensured consistent utilisation of the platform nationwide.
Tracking Nutrition Outcomes at an Unprecedented Scale
The scale at which Poshan Tracker operates is one of its most remarkable achievements. As of May 2026, more than 8.93 crore beneficiaries were registered on the platform, covering six categories across different stages of life, from early childhood and adolescence to pregnancy and motherhood.
The platform maintained a live monthly database tracking nutrition indicators for more than 7.7 crore children using Aadhaar-authenticated records. This extensive database enables policymakers to monitor trends and identify areas requiring intervention in near real time.
Poshan Tracker has also facilitated growth monitoring for more than 6.3 crore children aged up to five years, covering nearly 94 per cent of registered beneficiaries in this age group. The system continuously tracks indicators such as stunting, underweight prevalence, wasting, severe acute malnutrition and obesity, providing a comprehensive picture of nutritional outcomes across the country.
The availability of real-time dashboards, analytical tools and geographic heat maps has significantly strengthened evidence-based policymaking and programme management.
Strengthening the Supplementary Nutrition Programme
One of the key functions of Poshan Tracker is monitoring the Supplementary Nutrition Programme implemented under Anganwadi Services. The programme aims to improve the nutritional status of children, pregnant women and lactating mothers through the provision of nutritional support.
As of May 2026, data from Poshan Tracker showed that more than 5.5 crore beneficiaries had received supplementary nutrition for at least 15 days, while over 5.17 crore beneficiaries received support for at least 21 days during the reporting period.
These figures highlight the platform’s ability to monitor service delivery at scale and ensure that nutritional support reaches intended beneficiaries. By providing timely information on programme performance, Poshan Tracker helps authorities identify implementation gaps and improve delivery mechanisms.
Modernising Anganwadi Infrastructure Through Saksham Anganwadi
Poshan Tracker forms part of the broader Saksham Anganwadi initiative, which seeks to modernise Anganwadi Centres and improve service quality.
Under the initiative, centres are being upgraded with facilities such as LED screens, smart learning aids, water purifiers and Poshan Vatikas, or nutrition gardens. These improvements are designed to create more engaging and supportive environments for children and families while enhancing the overall quality of services delivered through Anganwadi Centres.
The initiative reflects the government’s recognition that effective nutrition interventions require both strong infrastructure and robust monitoring systems.
The success of Poshan Tracker has attracted recognition from both national and international organisations. The World Health Organization has cited the platform as an exemplary nutrition data ecosystem, highlighting its role in strengthening data-driven decision-making. UNICEF has also praised the platform for its user-friendly design and beneficiary tracking capabilities.
India showcased Poshan Tracker at the G20 Ministerial Conference on Women Empowerment in 2023, where it was recognised for its contribution to nutrition monitoring and early childhood education delivery.
The platform has also received prestigious awards for innovation and governance. In September 2024, it won the Gold Award at the 27th National Conference on e-Governance. In April 2025, it received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, further underscoring its significance in improving public service delivery.
As India continues its efforts to eliminate malnutrition and improve human development outcomes, Poshan Tracker is expected to play an increasingly important role. The platform has demonstrated how technology can be leveraged to strengthen governance, improve accountability and deliver services more effectively to millions of citizens.
By integrating beneficiary authentication, growth monitoring, early childhood education, nutrition delivery and real-time analytics into a single platform, Poshan Tracker has created a comprehensive ecosystem for nutrition governance. Its success reflects the broader objectives of the Digital India mission and highlights the transformative potential of technology in addressing complex social challenges.
As the country moves towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat, Poshan Tracker stands as a powerful example of how digital innovation can improve lives, strengthen public institutions and ensure that every child, mother and family has access to the support needed for a healthier future.
