A nikah celebration in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district turned into a scene of grief and chaos after a disagreement over the Mehar amount reportedly escalated during the ceremony, resulting in the death of the bride’s father. The tragic incident occurred in Islamnagar locality of Khatima, where relatives and guests from both families had gathered to celebrate the wedding.

According to reports, the Nikah ceremony was underway when a dispute broke out between members of the bride’s and groom’s families over the Mehar amount and related financial matters. What initially began as a verbal disagreement gradually intensified, creating tension at the wedding venue.

Witnesses said discussions over the Mehar amount became increasingly heated as both sides attempted to resolve the issue. As the argument continued, the bride’s father reportedly became unwell. Family members immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The sudden death of the bride’s father plunged the family into mourning and transformed what had been a festive occasion into a tragedy. Relatives and guests were left shocked as news of his death spread through the wedding venue.

Mehar dispute overshadows nikah ceremony

The incident took place during a nikah ceremony where the issue of Mehar became the centre of contention between the two families.

According to information shared by the groom, Arif, discussions had taken place regarding a Mehar amount of Rs 22.5 lakh. He stated that later there were suggestions that the amount should be treated as a loan from the side of the bride. Later this became one of the issues discussed during the ceremony.

Arif said he only wanted whatever had been agreed upon earlier to be followed and ignored this loan suggestion. He also claimed that the individual who had originally handled discussions regarding the amount was not present when the dispute erupted.

As tensions mounted, the bride’s father’s condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to the tragedy that overshadowed the Nikah.

Anger erupts after father’s death

The death of the bride’s father sparked tensions among family members and relatives present at the venue.

Reports indicate that after the news of his death emerged, tempers flared between the two sides. Members of the bride’s family stopped members of the wedding procession from leaving the venue, leading to further tensions.

Several Baraatis were reportedly prevented from leaving as emotions ran high following the tragedy. The atmosphere at the venue became increasingly tense, prompting concerns about law and order.

The situation eventually required intervention from local police authorities.

Police rush to venue

Upon receiving information about the disturbance, police personnel reached the wedding venue and deployed additional forces to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Officers worked to calm both sides and restore order. Police remained stationed in the area as a precautionary measure while discussions were initiated between representatives of the two families.

Khatima Kotwal Vijendra Shah confirmed that a dispute had occurred between the bride’s and groom’s sides regarding the Mehar amount during the wedding ceremony.

He stated that amid the dispute, the bride’s father’s health suddenly deteriorated. He was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead.

According to the police officer, tensions subsequently arose between the two sides, but the situation is currently under control and peace has been maintained in the area.

Groom Arif says he is innocent

Amid the controversy, groom Arif publicly defended himself and claimed he had no role in the developments that led to the tragedy.

He said that had he been informed about all aspects of the dispute beforehand, he would have attempted to resolve the matter.

Arif explained that his family had recently undertaken financial responsibilities, including constructing a house and arranging his sister’s marriage. He said that discussions regarding the Mehar amount had already taken place before the Nikah.

Maintaining that he was innocent, Arif claimed he was seated at the venue when the situation escalated and later found himself caught in the conflict.

Police await formal complaint

Police officials have stated that legal action will be taken in accordance with the law if either side submits a formal complaint.

For now, authorities continue to monitor the situation and maintain contact with both families. Discussions are ongoing in an effort to prevent further escalation.

The incident has shocked residents of the area, many of whom are struggling to comprehend how a disagreement over the Mehar amount during a Nikah ceremony culminated in the death of the bride’s father and turned a day of celebration into one of mourning.
