Hyderabad police seize vehicles without papers; AIMIM intervene and free them, raising Congress appeasement concerns

A late-night traffic enforcement drive by Telangana Police at Hyderabad’s Tank Bund has triggered controversy after AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig and corporator Zafar Khan were accused of intervening to secure the release of bikes seized for traffic violations

Hyderabad: Allegations have surfaced that leaders of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) intervened during a late-night police enforcement drive near Tank Bund in Hyderabad, leading to the release of vehicles that had been seized for traffic violations.

As per reports, Telangana Police conducted vehicle checks near the Ambedkar Statue at Tank Bund around 2 AM on March 9. During the enforcement drive, several motorcycles were reportedly seized after riders were found travelling without valid driving licences, registration papers, or other mandatory documents.

It is alleged that Mirza Rahmath Baig, an AIMIM Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), along with Zafar Khan, an AIMIM corporator, reached the spot and intervened in the matter. Reports claim that they helped some riders particularly Muslims youth get their seized bikes released from police custody.

The incident has triggered criticism from several quarters, with allegations that political influence was used to bypass the law. Critics have also questioned whether traffic rules were being applied selectively based on religous identity of the vehicle riders.

Dr Shashidhar, national spokesperson of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), strongly condemned the alleged incident and demanded action against those involved. “Right in front of the Ambedkar Statue at Hyderabad Tank Bund, the law was mocked last night. When police seized vehicles of Muslim youth for lacking documents, an MIM Party MLC interfered and forcibly took them away. Does the law not apply to MIM leaders? We demand immediate action against the MLC,” he said in a post on X.

Critics have also argued that such alleged interventions could embolden offenders and encourage further violations if individuals believe they can escape legal consequences through political influence.

One social media user highlighted what they described as a recurring pattern in traffic violations, posting:

“2 adults and a minor on a Bike. No helmets. Clear traffic violation. Hyderabad Police stop them — but MIM MLC confronts police for doing their duty. Not a one-off incident. Every day — the same pattern.”

BJP leader Sumiran Komarraju, raised questions about the handling of the incident and the role of the state government. “10 March 2026 – Tank Bund, 2 AM. Vehicles without documents seized. Leaders from MIM intervene saying they belong to Muslims during Ramzan. Police humbly oblige. For Hindu festivals → Restrictions. For Vote bank → No Rules. The Home portfolio is with CM @revanth_anumula. Is the Home Ministry run from the Secretariat or from Darussalam?” the post read.”

AIMIM, in a post on X, stated that as soon as this information was received by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, he immediately sent AIMIM MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig to the spot and himself spoke on the phone with the DCP of Khairatabad Zone, after which all the vehicles were returned.

Meanwhile, observers question about enforcement of traffic laws, AIMIM political influence in policing, and the neutrality of law enforcement in Hyderabad.
