A violent altercation broke out between two groups in Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh during celebrations of India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final. The clash occurred late Sunday (March 8) night in Raj Royal Colony under the jurisdiction of the Chimanganj Mandi Police Station, leaving several people injured.
According to police officials, the confrontation began with an argument over bursting firecrackers during the victory celebrations. The dispute quickly escalated into a physical clash between members of the two groups.
Station House Officer (SHO) Gajendra Pachoriya confirmed that police have registered FIRs from both sides and detained several individuals involved in the incident.
“A dispute arose between two parties over bursting firecrackers in Raj Royal Colony under Chimanganj Mandi police station limits on Sunday. A few people from both sides are injured. FIRs have been registered from both sides, and we’ve also rounded up some individuals,” Pachoriya said.
He added that five individuals from one group and three from the other, along with several associates, have been identified as accused in the case.
Police teams have begun examining CCTV footage from the area to identify additional individuals involved in the clash. Authorities have also deployed additional personnel in the locality to prevent further tensions.
Officials said a peace committee meeting would be organised to help restore calm and prevent escalation of the dispute.
“CCTV footage is being reviewed, and those found involved in the incident will be treated as accused. Adequate police personnel have been deployed at the site,” the SHO said.
While the country erupted in celebrations after India’s historic triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, incidents of clashes were reported from several cities in Madhya Pradesh, including Dewas, Ujjain, and Shajapur.
Meanwhile, a similar incident occurred in the Shajapur district. Young men were taking out a motorcycle rally to celebrate India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. During the celebrations, some youths allegedly threw a firecracker near the Peepalpatta Mosque on Kila Road.
The blast caused mud from a nearby drain to splash onto the mosque wall, which angered local residents. As news of the incident spread, a large number of people gathered at the spot, creating tension in the area. Police rushed to the scene immediately and brought the situation under control.
Victory processions celebrating India’s back-to-back T20 World Cup titles reportedly led to confrontations in some areas, with reports of stone pelting, vandalism of two-wheelers, and scuffles between groups. Police were forced to intervene and impose local restrictions in sensitive pockets to restore order.
The clashes came on a night when the nation was celebrating a historic sporting moment. India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Batting first, India posted 255 for 5, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final. Opener Abhishek Sharma scored a blazing 52 off 21 balls, while Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan contributed quick half-centuries to push the total past the 200-run mark early in the innings.
In the bowling department, India’s attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, dismantled New Zealand’s batting lineup, bundling them out for 159 runs despite a fighting 52 by Tim Seifert.
The victory made India the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to win consecutive titles after the 2024 triumph, and the first to lift the trophy three times (2007, 2024, and 2026).
Meanwhile, police in Ujjain have launched a detailed investigation into the violence. Authorities stated that those responsible for the clashes would face strict action under the law.
Officials also emphasised the importance of maintaining peace during large public celebrations and urged citizens to celebrate responsibly without allowing disputes to escalate into violence.
